Inspired by another thread i felt like sharing one of my few really close calls, for informational use as well as a "we all have them" for the new guys to stay vigilant.
It was a clear day, summer, mid morning. I was in the right forward lane of 4 lane 45 mph highway, coming up on the end of the highway there is a stoplight, 2 blocks beyond it drops to 35 mph. So im doing 40 or so, green light, empty, round 35,000 gvw. About a half block before the light i see movement from the right, a glance at the light, yup still green.... some old guy just starts driving across the intersection! Well #### me! Theres a suv on my left, no go, cant go right, thats where hes coming from, so i get on the horn and the binders, praying the guy next to me figures it out. I shudder to a stop not 10 feet from the old guy, he never looked over, well i killed the truck right there in the intersection, i look up, hell i still have a green! The suv stopped also, musta figured out something was up when i started smoking the tires, i restart the truck, cross the intersection and pull over, the suv pulled up and gave me a thanks. I told him, no, thank you. I didnt want to see it anymore then you wanted it to happen. If i hadnt noticed i would have cut him in half. Dont get complacent. What about you guys?

I was on my way back from the farm with a load of chicken's to the plant was on a 2 lane highway that has 45 mile per hour speed traps but the truck is governed at 62 and the smokey bears don't bother us cause they don't want to get pooped on Ha ha,so like I said I'm hammer down and rolling and if you don't the other joker will pass you and beat you to the plant and you lose a load so in what I do you have to move and not fart around, so I'm rocking and rolling and I'm used to having to think fast and move but, there was a idiot I came up on he must have been doing 35 in a 55 and so I tried to merge and go around he pulls over in front of me I couldn't do any thing but apply my brakes and downshifted her to 9th couldn't merge back had more 4 Wheeler's on my blind side luckily I was able to get the truck slowed down so I didn't run over top him,I had to check my shorts cause I could have sworn it was running down my leg and wouldn't you know we have drive cam's in the truck's and instead of getting a thank you for preventing a accident I get wrote up and disciplined and to end thing's the idiot that I didn't kill was in there raising Kane so there you have it only but,one incident in the life of a Trucker!!!!mpow66m and street beater Thank this.

Just south of Salt Lake City and in a construction zone.
A car is coming in on the on ramp and thinks either I will move over or he can pass me.
No go, either way. Traffic to my left, in front and behind, so I keep my speed.
He might have hit the concrete barrier on his right as he was slamming on the brakes.austinmike and grenade668 Thank this. -
This was my closest call so far in a truck. I was on a city street. Was going about 40 in a 50 zone due to numerous vehicles parked on either side of the road. I was pulling an empty 53' oilfield float trailer. Coming up on a 2 way stop (I was on the main road so no stop sign for me), I could just see the front end of a minivan poke out from behind the bushes. I start to ease up on the fuel at that exact moment they decide to gun it through the intersection. I hit the brakes hard and I must have missed them by a foot or 2 at the most. The just kept on rolling like nothing happend.

I don't recall the name of the highway, but it's the interstate that loops around Syracuse Ny. I had a load of about 38k. Not super heavy but enough that you can't stop on a dime. I was cruising somewhere between 55 and 58. I think the speed limit was 55. It was pouring rain, and we all know how 4 wheelers are in the rain. They usually slow way down, and sometimes they even stop on the shoulder. Well this particular highway had no shoulder. So anyway I came around a bend, and surprise! There's a 4 wheeler stopped dead right in the middle of the lane. No flashers, just stopped. I was so lucky there was no one next to me. I stomped on the brake and shot over and missed the poor fool by inches. And I think I had all of my body weight hanging from my air horn cable as I passed him.
It was a lesson I definitely learned the hard way, but thankfully we all made it out alive.grenade668 and White_Knuckle_Newbie Thank this. -
I've had some situations but none worth mentioning. Although there have been situations were I'm sure I've made 4 wheelers poop their pants. How big does a semi really have to be get noticed out here huh?? Jeeezzz!

Four wheeler started passing me on a no passing zone on US54 south of Vaughn, NM just as another four wheeler came over the hill in the opposite direction. The one passing me took the left shoulder and I took the right shoulder and the oncoming car passed right between us.

94 in Minneapolis, at night in the rain. Right under the Riverside avenue bridge was a car stopped with no lights at all. If i hadn't seen the darker spot in the dark I would have killed that driver. I wasn't very heavy, but i was doing the speed limit (55). Called the police and noticed they were gone on the way back past that area a few minutes later.
grenade668 Thanks this. -
It was like out of a #### movie. Wish I had dash cam footage. It was unreal.
