I make almost $30/hr plus full benefits to drive a company truck... $60 seems low..way low.
Dominick253, HalpinUout and crb Thank this. -
The customer is close. If I compared my rate to OTR, 600mi a day (10hrs) at 2.25 per mile = 1,350 - fuel cost guesstimation ($200) = 1,150 so the 115-125 $ hrly sounds about right but that's not factoring in the unpaid wait time for a backhaul, extra wear on the truck and OTR costs vs driving local.

I do a lot of local work box and running grain for the box stuff it's different 25 one way drop and hook paid by the load 140/round figures to 70 a trailer when I do that my hourly cost figures out to about 87.50/hour. $700 on an 8 hour day.
A dump truck runs for 100 an hour base line around here.
Belly and sides run for 100-120 an hour.
I wouldn't touch a local deal for less than 100 an hour. By bidding it at 60 an hour all you're doing is giving both places an excuse to jack you around. We have stuff that is a 10 mile round as well if we sit in line at the elevator for more than an hour we pull off and run elsewhere that day $80 for 10 miles isn't too bad when you pull up to the probe and are dumped and it takes you a whopping 45 minutes a round. $80 when it takes you 3 hours is flat out insane especially for a new customer.
I've had 3 days in the paSt 8 months that I've ate a day sitting around it was for my best customer and I was the only trucks that were willing to move them. I'll eat a days wage and sit for 4 hours waiting to unload. The next week I got 16000 bushels at .45 loads paid over 2.30/running mile. As I said they are my biggest customer and they made it right with me the next week.
It depends on the customer for a new guy he wouldn't get off the hook for less than $100 an hour for local work. I'll eat a little to keep someone happy who will take care of me at a later date I won't eat anything on somebody who is looking for prices and has an unknown pay history. I don't care if they paid company xyz on 3 days that doesn't mean they're going to pay me that quickly. Hopefully you're understanding the point I'm making here.
FWIW the box stuff I do isn't steady anymore like it once was. But it pays 87.50 an hour bills are sent in around 1 am and I have a money code on my phone the next day between 530 and 7 am. As I said you before take care of who takes care of you.fordconvert, Dominick253 and crb Thank this. -
$60 per hour?......stay in bed
HalpinUout, Dominick253 and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
Seriously 60$? Maybe 30+ years ago but no way in hell when some company jobs pay in the mid 30's. STOP DRIVING RATES DOWN, it's bad enough with all the mega's running day cabs and killing short hauls
Thegasman and Dominick253 Thank this. -
Why jerk around go right to the $1.20 a mile range, and free delay time.
Ruthless Thanks this. -
Don't sell yourself short. Just remember there is a real good chance that fuel could be another dollar or so more a gallon by the end of the summer at the rate it's going. There's been accounts that I enjoyed doing but became way to cheap to where I couldn't compete and reality set in.
Dominick253 Thanks this. -
You charge them $100+ and they tend to move faster. $60 is detention pay. In addition you need to get paid weekly. Don't let them wait till the end, if they want to borrow money go see a bank.
Dominick253 Thanks this. -
The OP should also be looking to reinvest a portion of his earnings back in to his business. Plan for the future, different truck/trailer, etc. Not to mention the cost of daily repairs and the fact that one catastrophic engine failure could wipe out months of earnings.
fordconvert, crb, cnsper and 1 other person Thank this.
