Did you get your 98vhp back from Harddrive yet? You need to post full report after using it for a while. I saw on one of his videos he had a switch hooked up so that the operator could turn the amp section on or off, did he do the same thing to yours? Just curious about the final outcome.

I believe he installs an amp switch on all the 98s he does.

I believe I would run it most the time with amp section off, only time I would run amp on were if I was stationary and talking skip.

Yup I have it but he was out of coax at time of ship. He's going to send another package with coax, mount, stud and ground straps once the coax comes in.

I got the antenna yesterday but I'm waiting for everything to get it together and dial it in.

He posted an after video but its on his FB wall. I think it's about a 50w dead key and it's much cleaner on the o-scope and spectrum analyser but it's even cleaner with the amp turned off, and that's a 3w dk. He said not to expect a lot from the SSB which sucks. But the radio is about 1000 percent better than it was.

Once I get the antenna system running right I'll post more about it.

I have the Galaxy 99v2 which according to Galaxy website has the same circuit board as the 98vhp obviously without the amp section, and yes the ssb does suck, but I guess Im spoiled by the ssb on the Bearcat 980 and an older Cobra 148gtlf that Ive used. Well. Guess we will wait for full report when you get it all together, thanks for the comeback.

You talk about that 980 a lot. I have a hard time believing it's that good or better than my tuned 959. Amazon has the 980 for $114.00 I'm tempted to find out for myself. But I don't need another radio. And you guys spend $500.00+ for an export radio with ssb, have it tuned only to be told don't expect much from the ssb portion of the radio?! Even with a 50w DK?!?

Im impressed with the 980 dont know anything about a 949/959 have never owned one I was referring strictly to the 99v2 in comparison to the 980, I didnt buy the 99 for ssb primarily for AM where it does shine, and I didnt pay $500 I paid $ 275 which is not as much that you plan on possibly spending for a 955. With running the risk of being redundant I will no longer make reference to the 980 there are enough posts on previous threads, I guess if you ever have $114 burning a hole in your pocket buy one and try it but you probably, like most , will be not be satisfied with am performance because it does not show big watts on " fluff " meters.

In addition the 99v2 does not deadkey 50 watts, it is just your garden variety dual final radio, 12 watt carrier 50 watt pep on par with General Lee and other export radio.

And I was never told by anyone what to expect and what not to expect from a radio, I make my own decisions and my own purchases and bought in primarily because I got it for a good price and I have had Galaxys before and like the way it performed, as far as am rigs only would never even consider spending more than what I would pay for a 29 for a 949/959 , havnt heard alot of goid things at all about those radios especially on ssb.
