Sadly, when you're sitting on the side of the road you don't think to Google someone and see if there are any bad reviews on them either. You just wanna get your truck someplace and get it fixed.

I also didn't have great coverage to google with. Actually that's why I called in the breakdown and took the recommendation. Unfortunate. In all future situations that I may not be able to access information first hand, I will be requesting the online reviews before choices are made.

It's safe to say some bad breaks came together. But actually I think the fact that so many complaints have existed before mine will lend weight fighting this. I have a strategy. I don't know yet if it will work for sure, but I will keep the thread informed about how it goes.
ramblingman and Terry270 Thank this. -
So how did their price match up to other quotes you got?
-
Please update. Interested in seeing how this ended up. Best of luck though
readysethaul Thanks this. -
Herring ended up quoting $8000 total. Volvo of Somerset quoted under 5baha Thanks this.

Holy crap. I would think that you owe them for the tow only. They did not have authorization to touch your truck so they are obligated to put it back how they found it and let you find another towing company to bring it to Volvo. I find it really hard to believe that in any state this would be legal. I think ooida is wrong on this. Call BBB they will know for surebrian991219 and readysethaul Thank this.

i would be standing nose to nose with the person who runs the place having a very intense discussion. but that is just me. im not a lawyer, but I would refuse to pay if I didn't ok the work. then I would get a lawyer and sue for the unauthorized bill and lost wages you would lose while your truck is being held hostage!

In Pennsylvania a repair shop can not do any work without a signed authorization, and further the shop is required to provide a written estimate upfront before you sign the work order. They can not charge you more than the estimate without you signing another authorization, so yes you were taken advantage of. The advice OOIDA gave you was correct (I don't usually say that often as I strongly dislike them), you need to file a writ of replevlin with the local county Court of Common Pleas. You will have to post cash bond in the amount of the invoice and then the shop will be directed to release your vehicle by the judge. Then you will be scheduled for a hearing where the judge will look at the facts of the case and decide how much, if anything, you owe the shop and his decision is final.
As for their tow and storage bill, those rates are not regulated in Pennsylvania unless they towed you off of the PA Turnpike. If you have an issue with his tow bill, and it was from the PA Turnpike, you can contact Pennsylvania State Police Troop T to contest the towing and storage bill. -
You are very knowledgable, that is a matter of fact what i worked on this week. I found an attorney and we set up the replevin and bond. Right now we are waiting for a response from the Herring Motor Co. As we gave them an option to change their mind. I also filed a complaint with BBB and the attorney general of PA. My next move may be to talk to the local news company. If I am going to eat a loss or worse I would like a bit of justice, and not just for me. A local I spoke to has been muscled by these guys too.truckthatpassesyouby, Terry270 and brian991219 Thank this.
