It can be challenging to balance home life with job satisfaction. For me, running long haul made me a better husband because I was happy with my job and made good money. Others can't deal with being away from home, so that's a personal choice. You'll find the right niche that strikes the right balance.

Yea absolutely, I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation.
I'm divorced with a 6 year old kiddo that I'm a big fan of. The ex wife will be having him the whole time while I'm in school, and if I have to get some otr experience, she will take him for that duration as well, I'm in a roommate situation with the homeowner and he is good with minimum rent if I have to stay otr for a bit since I'll only be home a few days a month. So the situation will work out either way, but obviously end goal is to be local so I can have my kiddo with me more. Rather than only being part time dad.

That is very true, in the St Louis area you will only get around $15/hr starting for a local job. It makes no difference to me since I have E6 pay and full benefits already coming in, but for someone else that might not be enough.

The Farm Services company I got hired on for some seasonal work does not advertise, it is all word of mouth or the driver inquiring. So you are also correct that it usually takes a little work to get your foot in the door.

I used my GI Bill to go to Trucking school. Got bah while I went. Helped out cause I wasn't working while I went. The program I did was the four week course. I attended Advanced School of Driving out in Fontana CA. I was happy with the basic training I received. I went to college before Trucking school and didn't care for it. So for me it made sense to use my gi bill instead of paying cash or going with a company sponsored program.
Driven for a couple companies since and was never obligated to stay if I didn't like them or had a family emergency and chose to leave. If you don't have plans to use your GI Bill for college then I would suggest using it for truck driving school. You paid to have it so might as well use it. Good luck to you if you haven't started already, and good luck to you if you have also. Lol.

One company you can get on with out in Reno straight out of school is R&S Supply. We haul roofing products ( commercial and shingles ). The pay could be better but your home every night if that's something you need. We also load the roofs and not everyone is cut out for that, most people are afraid of heights and add a steep roof to that..... You get my point lol. It's a local gig that you can get some flatbed experience with. I like it but I'm planning on going back over the road when I move in September.

No, I don't live in Reno. My brother used to though. Not that that matters lol. I live in Belgrade Montana. We have a store in Reno though. If all goes to plan I will be in Tampa before the next winter lol. I'm not a fan of cold and snow.

Tampa is ok. Friend of mine lives in Land O Lakes just North of Tampa. I moved to Las Vegas/Henderson to get away from snow & ice during the winter. Moved from Tennessee.

If you want to go local then you should use your gi bill at a local community college that has cdl training.
The community college will probably have local job contacts.
Those for profit truck driving schools will only arrange for otr jobs.
