I haven't done it yet, but I think a 50/50 split would encourage the driver to use less fuel, fuel at the better priced pumps, and drive the truck easier since he knows how he drives will affect his bottom line.
Paying 50% to drive my flatbed under my authority. Is it a good deal?

I just don't get what the big deal is about fuel. I am having a good day if I get over 4 mpg. If fuel is that big of an issue for you then govern the truck.
-
If you you are that concerned about the habits of his right foot that you cant trust him to be efficient, then is he really the kind of driver you want?
I agree with the others. 25 - 30% is pretty common for a good driver in this industry. Let the driver do what he does best.. you handle the company side. Dont over complicate things or both of you will end up un-friending each other.

If you put a speed limit on the truck 9 times out of 10 the driver will ram the speed to that limit every time. So what does a driver do with a 62mph governed truck, even going up hills he will try to keep that truck at 62. That's were the wear n tear and huge loss of fuel comes from.Last edited: Apr 28, 2016

Thanks for everyones input.... With this guy, I have painted myself in a corner with the 50/50 offer buy I'll honor it if we choose to do it.
I've never ridden with him or seen how he drives. We are leaving out in a couple hours and running one of those 3800.00 (1807 miles) plymouth nc to nd runs that are flooding the boards here in nc. That will be a good initial run as 800 in fuel, his split will be 1500 for first 2 days. I went and got it loaded today while he is on his way driving down from NY in his car. We have a 1pm sat delivery planned. From there we will reposition the truck on sunday for a monday run and ultimately have me back in Tampa by Friday May 6 , my wifes first surgery is the 9th.
My truck isn't governed and I have no plans to govern it. I'll run hard when I can get a reload and slow it down when the extra speed doesn't do anything for me other than sit longer in a parking lot. Hopefully he will see the value in doing the same. If he takes care of the truck/trailer/equipment and drives safe, then we are a go.
So 6 days together, I'll get a feel for how his habits are and he can decide if working with me and this deal is something he wants to do. Hopefully he'll do well with it. If not, I'll just park the truck until my wife is on the road to recovery as I don't have contacts finding solid drivers.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
The problem with your plan is that you will not have any money for future truck replacement and provide you with income.

2.10 a mile to the black hole of North dakota? I'm leased to a carrier and wouldn't touch that load.
jldilley, Hurst, whoopNride and 2 others Thank this. -
I wish you good luck. I have an uncle that did the same thing out of South Texas with reefer loads and the poor guy only lasted with his good friend driving about 8 months. The problem was the driver was making quite a bit more money and wound not want to run but 12-18 days out of month. Which was great for him, but not the owner when my uncle covered all expenses. There friendship was broken after that. Good luck.

This is the reason I do 50/50.

That's what I was thinking, way too cheap.
