I would spend 20-25k on a preemissions(2002 or older) freightliner classic or peterbuilt, and keep the rest for repairs and reserve. Or if you want newer check out the gliders from Schneider Trucks, they have used 2012-2013 trucks for sale that have older non emission engines installed.

Just for overall lower cost of ownership. Past 500k on a newer truck you'll spend a lot on emissions repairs. DPF filter will be beyond its life, likely the ceramics are damaged from multiple cleanings. DEF doser and sensors will probably have issues, EGR's are better than they used to be but still are very expensive to replace. I'm just a fan of older motors as the replacement parts are cheaper and they are a bit lighter. To each his own- but I would either choose brand new under warranty, old pre2002 iron, or a glider if I was looking to go owner operator.

Check out the Freight Broker forum, I've never ran off load boards aside from trying to find back hauls. I would say just sign on to a company like Landstar or Mercer until you find your own brokers. I'm not a flatbedder, so I can't really help on that one.
