That isn't the context of his statement. It had nothing to do with the nutritional value of a calorie, it was the calorie itself. If you are taking in more calories than you are burning, you gain weight. A 100% raw diet maybe different, you may end up passing what your body doesn't absorb, but I'm not sure. But since the majority of truck drivers don't eat like that, it's probably moot point
Tips on staying healthy on the road.

By saying to someone to do his/her research you should do that also.
There is a HUGE difference where you get the calories from. Lets take an example - 3000kcal a day - way too much for a truck driver due to lack of movement. You eat McDonalds, Burger King, other fatty fast foods 3 times a day and get your 3000kcal. I eat 6 times per day 500kcal meals - lean beef, chicken breasts, whole grain bread, fresh/steamed vegetables, fish and so on.
And you tell me after 2-3 months we will both gain +- same weight? Please, do your research. -
Avoid soda, lay off the energy drinks. Drink water.
For snacks, eat things that grow out of the ground (fruit, nuts, veggies....).
Avoid fast food.
"Graze" through out the day. If you make a sandwich, eat half, eat the other half when you start to get hungry again. Evenly space out your meals, don't allow yourself to become hungry... which results in big meals that not only process slowly while sitting on your rear, you tend to become more lethargic.Diesel Dave and Arnasme Thank this. -
i'm trying to find the sweet spot with this too. having worked in construction most my life and as a modern dancer, i could eat anything i wanted, whenever i wanted. i started in flat bed and also could do the same...not so with this dry van business. i'm making the miles and the money with this dry van/reefer company but i'm sitting heaps.
i'm meeting with a nutritionist soon and i'll see what she has to say about things. i've changed my diet pretty radically--no buffets, soups rather than heavier meals....15 meals on the road, 14 of those are home made. i do let myself nosh once in awhile on a small bag of chips or chocolate covered raisins....i had a few months of bloating but watching my salt intake has helped with that. i drink maybe one pop a year--water is my favourite drink.
and i take my dog for more walks than before as well as use the body health app that comes on iPhones...just as a gauge for how many steps i have walked. some weeks i get over 10,000 steps, two or three times....sometimes i only hit that mark once. and on my days off, i find a fitness class or go swimming. i'm still not completely satisfied with the size of my 'trucker's muscle(tummy)' but i'll just keep tweaking what i'm doing.
i also plan to return to flat bed.Left coast trucker Thanks this. -
We can eat healthy all we want but it still wont make up for all the sitting we do . As I said earlier I think it driver's should be allowed and encouraged to load and unload their own trailers and with an manual pallet jack lol. And get paid for it . Instead of trying to do as much miles mix it with some work. -
