You do what it takes which is in your control.
Guess who will be wasting time, $, & miles.
5th hardly ever has to be moved. But is it all that difficult for a single load, then put it back. Slides for a reason.
My, my, my.....
You do what it takes to get the job done.
No way I'm going to waste hours for something that will take minutes & little effort. Time is money, and my time is too valuable to waste over something like this.Last edited: May 7, 2016

He did what he felt is right and I respect that. Me personally, I would have dropped the landing gear real quick, lower my airbags and shifted the 5th wheel forward or aft 1 notch. Now that said, doing that will give you about 250 lbs either way, maybe a little more. Anyhow it all depends on how much weight I needed to shift, so its all circumstantial as I don't know.nofreetime, darthanubis, FullMetalJacket and 2 others Thank this.

That would be the only thing I do, is take that 250 off the steers so I'm not running with max load on my steers tempting a blow out. I'm at ..
12240
33420
32700
78360
Front load max is 12290.
I'm in the 7th hole, and 3rd on the 5th wheel.
BTW The manual advises against dumping the suspension to come from under a load or slide the fifth, just something I read in the manual. I was dumping the bags every time when dropping a trailer as I was taught... incorrectly. But it does advise to drop the landing gear on an empty trailer to slide the fifth. So, having them rework the load instead of risking expensive damage to your livelihood, makes no sense. There little, time, money you save or make for a few hundred bucks could cost thousands in the long run. Each driver has to manage their own risks. That fifth wheel is slidable to be set for proper safe tractor running. Like the load on the steers. If weight can't be made with tandem adjustment, the load was not loaded properly.
Now, I'm only going from what the manufacturer of the fifth wheel and some other online material suggests. As you all know I'm new. So, I don't profess to tell you veterans how to truck, just maybe something's that I use to become a better trucker myself. Also, I'm bored, and this is a discussion board.nofreetime, Highway101, FullMetalJacket and 1 other person Thank this. -
I did what was in my control, had them rework the load.
Nothing was wasted, maybe their time, but I delivered on time and got paid all the same, without over loading my steers, or pushing them.
It is more difficult than doing nothing. And it's never just one load, as it sounds like this is something that's a regular occurrence. That's why it slides right?
Again, the job did get done.
Again, what hours? Took those guys 30 minutes to rework the load. There is more things valuable to me than money, like safety. I leave my fifth were it's safe to run, for every load. Whenever I become super pressed for money, maybe my outlook will change, but I hope it never comes to that.
Blow a steer and see how much time and money you saved.... If you live through it and don't kill someone else in the process.
The chase for money is short sighted. That's why guys run in blizzards using their trucks as snowplows right? Then wonder how they ended up in the median. Why do these things, for a few more dollars?Highway101 and FullMetalJacket Thank this. -
Parked at 90 in Fort Worth. So close to home, yet so far and not enough time to even say Hi.
Not due home for several more weeks.
Had a horrible last couple of days. Seems like I got yelled at by everyone and their dog over nothing the last few days. I've had this major headache (need to drink more water) and just found out my brother may be convicted and sent to prison this week (which is good for society, but sucks major ### for my family and I).
I love this job, but the worst part of this is not being home to support my loved ones. I know this will be a stressful week for them. -
Having to mess w/5th rarely occurs, almost never. Can count on one hand the times I have had to do it.
1/2hr was great. A rework could & usually would entail hours. Not happening if I am legal on weights with a little slide.
I never have, and never will run an unsafe load "chasing money". My record speaks for itself.

@darthanubis
Apology owed to you for how I posted.
Posted on the fly during a trying week. Not my usual style. No excuse, though.
I could have made my point in a much more well mannered & polite way. My bad & I apologize for that.
nofreetime, Highway101, darthanubis and 2 others Thank this. -

It's all good it's only discussion.
Worst case scenario I learn something and become a better truck driver.
We care about what we do, and that's a good thing.
Peace to you brother!Chucktshoes, Highway101 and FullMetalJacket Thank this.
