Old Dominion is a very... consistent first class operation for what they do. In Maryland and Virginia if you catch one of these trucks sitting still long enough to examine them, the equipment is somewhat older but nothing wrong with them that I could tell.

If you run with them, good luck!

Well, you just dispelled the myth that, "New cdl grads can only work for slave wages" or "As a new driver, expect to live on poverty wages and be gone for months and months away from your family and friends."

***Long post alert *** I'm very excited about this opportunity with Old Dominion. It's because of you Chinatown and a driver that reached out to me that I was driven to seek out this opportunity with Old Dominion. Chinatown, thank you for all your posts about OD. You once said that, "The coveted job in the trucking industry in the USA is line haul with OD." I didn't forget that which you said, and I took it and ran with it and made it my mission, because I wanted that job. I chose which trucking school to attend based on whether Old Dominion hired from that school. I'm very grateful for your willingness to help new drivers in this forum with your wealth of information. Thank you!

Then I posted another question, and a driver for Old Dominion reached out to me. He loves line haul with OD and was very gracious and referred me to the line haul manager and gave me his contact information. I immediately called the manager. That same hiring manager came to recruit at our class, so I was able to meet him in person. He said he had 13 positions available, some of which were line haul. I'm very grateful for this driver reaching out to me, and I made sure he will get the referral fee.

I pursued nailing down an interview appointment with the manager, and I met with him during my first week of school before even getting out on the pad behind the wheel of a truck. He was very impressed with my MVR because it's sparkling clean, even after transporting human freight over thousands and thousands of miles as a chauffeur. By the time I met with him only within a week later after he visited our class, he had only 6 of the 13 positions left. I told him I really want one of those line haul positions. He said, "I'll hold a spot for you. Call me when you take your test to let me know how you're doing." I requested he write that on his calendar. Lol (Because of years in sales, to me it's not a done deal until the money is in the bank, so I solidified that phone call appointment.)

I called and left a voicemail, and he actually returned my call several days later (he just returned from vacation). When we spoke and I told him I'm a class A CDL holder now, he immediately arranged an appointment with me to go in so I can start immediately after graduation.

They have a driver test which consists of connecting pups, alley dock backing, etc., which I'm slightly concerned about (at class they say I'm an overachiever and hard on myself with regard to high expectations of myself lol); however, an instructor at school has agreed to tutor me one on one if necessary.

I hope all this comes to pass, and I STILL am amazed how all this has worked out. FINALLY, after 15 long years of STRUGGLING as a single mom of 3, something FANTASTIC has come my way!!! Again, THANK YOU!!!
