One thing I am suprised truck stops DONT have (though i am sure some do, but it isnt 'standard'), they have barber shops, showers, wi-fi, and movie lounges, but they DON'T seem to forget about excercise equipment. It don't have to be a YMCA, just some free weights, treadmills, ski machines...but no rock wall, cause i know i am not coordinated enough. ;-)

I am sure this topic has been thrown around, but being on the road, other than maybe unloading your truck, you dont get your heart rate up much. What can you do as a truck driver, to get some excersise everyday you are on the road?? A good FAST walk for 30 min. a day before you eat much of anything? If you are lucky enough to find a gym close to a truck stop, great...but what can a driver do, to maintain muscle, etc.

I am in my last week working at a truck stop, and i dont want to turn into some of these 400lb drivers whos belly bends their spine in such a way, you cannot believe it don't snap when they step out of their truck. The bigger you are, the more 'smelly' you get....and it seems those are the guys who dont CARE they are a quarter of a TON, and smell like 2 week old tuna that's been left out. ;-)

Hey there Snowman - I have started to answer this post two different times and though better of it, but I couldn't walk away from it a third time.

I won't respond to your typecasting of others, but what I will do is put a call out to others who find these statements caustic at best to help me in my quest.

I am going to Pray, think, repeat chants, light candles, meditate, and consult a Wiccan Priestess. In the hopes that you will get that very individual as your trainer and mentor.

Who knows but maybe through the power of numbers we may be able to make it happen for you.

I am going to say by for now and get started.......................

Not really type casting, if facts support the therory. You can be a big boy (like me) and NOT be stinky. Have a little pride in yourself, and wash and smell half way diecent.

If my trainer ends up smelling like Tuna, I will be calling my DM or whoever I need to call, and I'll get a new one. I have the right, along with the guy standing behind him in line for a fuel ticket, not to smell his B.O. If you think so, then give me your address, and i'll send you a yearly supply of Irish Spring.

Not trying to upset you, but if you get offended by someone being honest about their right about not smelling other people, then i'm not the one with a problem.

My oldest nephew is a big boy, pushing up near 300lbs... he doesn't drive trucks (I pray he never drives a car!) He collects recyclables from the trash.. But one thing I must say for him... he never stinks! He's always been very careful about that! He uses the Old Spice deodorant wipes and he carries them with him everywhere!

    Snowman&Fred and Cybergal Thank this.

He could make $20k a lecture once a month about how to take some pride in yourself. Glad to see there are people who actually care about themselves enough....and are atleast somewhat concious about offending others around them. Glad to hear it.

OK, I liked the title of this thread but it didn't really go there. I'm just about to become a student and am not overweight, but I know how exercise benefits me. So, you're on the road and want to work out. Running or jogging or even walking can be good, but some of that will depend on the weather. I carry a hand exerciser in my car (it's not much but it helps). Anyone carry weights or anything?

My personal opinion is: If you want to workout, you're used to working out, staying shape, you will find a way to workout. Most truckers from back in the day, never took their health into consideration. Sitting for hours at a time, then doing nothing while you are resting, of course one is going to blow up like a balloon. You can find places to workout. There are 10 hours you need to take off, so you can workout in that time.

I'd recommend, if you are considering carrying weights, purchasing Power Blocks as opposed to those plastic, commercialized "Dumb"bells that Bow Flex offers. Power Blocks are more expensive, but having used them, they will last forever. Plus, and take this from a person who knows...Anything a bodybuilder does for training, do the opposite....;-)

Well, I'm not looking to get big. Mostly cardio stuff. Several (very several) years ago I was running marathons and sort of got out ot it. But I have to say I probably felt better then (or perhaps it was being 20 years younger). But I think if I'm going to have a lot of time I might as well do something good for myself.

If cardio is your thing, that should be easy. Carry a bike with you. Or, a skateboard. Park the farthest parking spot at a truck stop. I'm new to this, just like you. I've been planning ahead on how to remedy the fitness concerns. If you read these message boards, ask questions, you should get answers. Of course, you're going to run into the occasion dope who wants to "argue" via message board posts. Those are the ones who need to get off the computer, throw away the bag of Doritos, sell the PlayStation on EBay, get a gym membership and drop 50lbs...=-)

I'm pretty sure I would hurt myself on a skateboard but biking is a good idea. Seeing as I'm about to start my training guess I'll just pack my running shoes for a while though and see where I could put a bike.
