No, I don't smell anything. Doesn't smoke either.

Usually with a real bad exhaust guide you will notice just a little oil smoke on start up. Usually a little oil smell when starting out loaded for sure.

Thump on floorboard could be flex pipe hitting .. When I had a head gasket start to go on a 6nz it kept pushing up my dipstick for awhile until it started using coolant then we found issue cats solution on dipstick was they put a dimple in the tube which did keep it from popping out but they still did a head gasket on warranty later thankfully Man I miss that engine lol

No one has addressed the thumping. Injector, harness, or ecm related problem affecting one cylinder. I believe fore and aft play (not sideways play) is the bigger factor in determining turbo wear.

I'm pretty sure he still does have a 3408, or at least he had one.

I worked on a lobster boat that had one of them and I have some very good stories about that engine, 500 hp and would put a 1271 twin turbo 650 hp to shame with a bigger load on a exact same hull that other wise was faster empty, it was on a Torres 43 footer, a very popular hull for that kind of fishing in the Florida Keys.

Love those Cats, the clatter they produce is tattooed to my memory for ever, the first time I heard it running I thought somebody has drained the oil out of it.

You ever work on a Crusader boat? My buddy Andy used to manufacture them down in the Keys.

That is a good point. Before computers I saw some engines with bad injectors do somethings like that but some of them already had a hole in the piston before I saw them. I do not know how they sounded early on. A washed out galled piston-liner can hammer and have blow by. Never say that with a computer engine personally.
