I have an uncle who is an OO and for as long as I've known him he works 1 week and then takes a week off.
So 26 weeks a year if that, and this is consistent. Out and back run and done for a week and he's still making good money.
I also know OOs who probably haven't seen their bed in 6 mos.
Obviously everyone's situations are different. $4k truck payment vs no truck payment and so on.
Really I'm curious how many of you are able to run your business like my uncle does, because it seems like something from the "good old days" of trucking that isn't very easy to do anymore, he's actually the only guy I know of who can run his truck like that.
O/O home time

I cannot personally, but I know a few who can/do, but they all have little to no personal bills to speak of.

I'm not a week out and a week in usually. But I don't work much more then that. This year I've only been out about 50% of the time. I spend a week to make my truck/trailer and exp. payments. A week for fun money and call it a month it seems. But like said above, my other expenses are pretty much taken care of.

For the last couple years I've been taking 5 to 6 months off. While not exactly how your uncle does it it amounts to the same home time. Sometimes i stay out for a while month if the rates are high. But I'm also home for a month at a time when rates are low.blairandgretchen and CasanovaCruiser Thank this.

Ok, none of us work to hard here I can see, as we are all leased to the same place. LOL.

I guess I'm curious to know what the difference between the drivers who are capable of running a business like that and the guys who never go home and still can't make ends meet.
I know @CJndaTruck just got that beautiful WS so it's not like you guys are driving crap that just came over the border lol
All I can think is that it's poor money management/reckless spending. -
I picked up on that as well lol

I would say the biggest factor is poor money management. Also a lot of so called OOs are really LP guys at a mega working for .90¢ PM thinking they are going to own the world without saving for a rainy day.
People buy into the LP will make x amount more then a company guy and jump on it. Companies don't talk about failure rates and repair cost. Don't get me wrong, I got my first 2 trucks through a LP with a mega. But I was a 1% er there.CasanovaCruiser Thanks this. -
I usually go out for 10-14 days, then home for 8-10 days.
Maybe it comes down to the old saying about working smarter, not harder. I also know guys who constantly work and they have nothing to show for it.CasanovaCruiser, CJndaTruck and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
I live to be a 1%er. Maybe one day I can figure out how to circle back around to the house quickly and join that club. I mean, I still only work half the time I'm out, but I'm out 3 or 4 weeks at a time, then home for a week or two.CJndaTruck Thanks this.
