For those of you with reading comprehension skills at or below the third grade....
NOWHERE did I mention about walking away from a financial obligation. I have talked to several mega training companies and they all say the if you leave before your contracted time is up. you owe the remaining balance. I WOULD PAY THE REMAINING BALANCE.
The idea is not pissing thousands of dollars away up front before starting a career that pays peanuts for at least 12 months. That's stupid. Even if you go with a great company chances are you aren't going to make decent money for that first year, so why not keep some to keep your finances afloat while you are learning?
Having a mega carry the note on CDL school and paying it back over time makes more sense. If things get intolerable on the road, you have that money in the bank and if you are so unhappy, you can take that money after a few months, pay off the mega for the training and move on.
All these posters talking about defrauding a company or other nonsense really need to brush up on their reading skills.
Scamming the scammers?

Reading skill RULE NUMBER ONE, Title of thread reads Scamming the Scammers, which implies the op or original poster wants to scam the scammers.
Why defraud anyone if you have the money to pay for truck driving school. Then pay for it....and not deal with the mega companies, it's as simple as SimonJReding and Toomanybikes Thank this. -
I give up.
-
Don't give up, but don't plan to cheat anyone either.
A lot of these "bad" companies will train you to be a good driver so you can get any driving job you desire,
Anyone can pass the written part of the CDL test and in most big cities you can find a tractor trailer to practice in and take the CDL test in . But the extra training is priceless. -
You got to look at yourself for that comment. You are the one who implied with the title of your theads that you intend to "scam" someone. You claim you want to sign a contract for schooling, choose not to work for the company you school with, then default on the contract and try to renegotiate the terms of the contract whey you desire to clean up your credit. That is your scam. Do you think these folks will want to renegotiate the terms without a default? That doesn't happen. They have a contract you agreed to that is all they need to stick you with the full amount. You have no leverage. A student loan contract you cannot even ditch with a bankruptcy.
No, you said you would renegotiate the remaining balance. To do that you would have to default on the contract. Read your own words. Read the contracts. The only leverage you have in the contract is to default. That is what what you have to do to renegotiate, no contract holder is renegotiating out of the kindness of their heart, especially not a mega-crap trucking company.
Who says you are going to make "decent" money the second or third year? Many don't. You don't seem to get there is no shortage of drivers. That is a myth made by those that sell schooling to train drivers. Going into a job market with just a license and little to no experience puts in the back of a long line of drivers that have that and more.
Yes that is the thinking they use to rope you into these schooling contracts. The unsuspecting potential driver, just thinks I can jump ship just anytime and pay off the loan. Few do. Many do not and are left with a stain on their credit score and no job prospects any better then the one they had. That is what we are talking about. Having a CDL does not in anyway guarantee a job, there is not any shortage in the industry to think that way.
Some come on here thinking you can insult truck drivers because they are truck drivers. From what I can see, those responding here have a better grasp of reading and how things work then you, who pretend to be superior. -
avoid megas, anything, at all costs....
Painfull thread!!!
Find another way man...you can do all the written stuff yourself...easy easy
Run an ad in craigs for someone to show you how to drive a truck...heck call penske and rent one
You can find local work to get your first year or more experience...I ran dumptrucks and water trucks my first years..
If you have the licence, a ton of companies will hire you as a newbie
The hitch is the license itself...Get it on your own!! skip the scam of the driver mills..
Heck, I bet you got some small goofy school in town ran by grumpy ol x truckers..they have 3rd party testing privilages and a truck!! call them!!!
Think outside the box..avoid mega
A local college here has a CDL program...6 months , 17 thousand dollars....WHAT!!! -
I know exactly what you mean lol. Sign out, recreate a profile and ask the question in a different context, a whole new batch of comments will appear lol.

Well, after talking to several companies, schools and harassing truckers at a truck stop in Tacoma, I decided to bite the bullet and pay for my own CDL. I start school in two weeks and have put in applications to both mega trainer companies and a few local ones who liked my background and are at least willing to consider my application.
The idea of paying for school without a job lined up is scary, but potentially serving a year as an indentured servant was scarier.
I've wanted to try this for years and I'm excited to see where this will take me. -
That is the best decision you could possibly make if you want to go down this route. It will pay off ten fold. Dont worry about getting a job, as long as there is nothing in your background preventing you from getting hired in the first place, trucking companies are still hiring by the boatloads.......even with freight numbers down like they are. -
Knight is only taking people in the Phoenix area for their CDL school. I just talked to a recruiter last week. I was really bummed at that news.
