I have several questions regarding becoming a Freight Broker before I go into the business. I understand there is a difference between being an agent and being a broker. I am looking to become a broker. Once I have the authority to broker out frights, how would I go about connecting with shippers? Would I have to make cold calls, go out to sites, is there a load board to find shippers? What's the best way to go about finding shippers? Also, once I'm a broker I understand I am not responsible for the load but, if something happens to the load while in transit would I then be held responsible for it or would the motor carrier? I have so many more questions but will start with these two.

It's better for you to go work as an agent for somebody first to learn everything

I would not use loadboards to find freight only to post. you need to spend massive amounts of time cold calling direct shippers. Its all about building relationships. As a broker you will need a surety bond of at least 75k as of today. you also need to run credit checks on carriers and shippers. you need to make sure all insurance certificates are up to date with carrier.. you should really find a broker that will take you under their wing as an agent learn and build your book of business. hope this helps.

Getting your broker authority right off the bat is a horrible idea. It is not easy finding shippers that will offer you loads right away, especially with a brand new surety bond. Your best bet is to become an agent for someone, that way you can build your book of business using their surety bond but for split commission. The benefit of that is you don't have to shell out thousands of dollars for startup costs, and when contacting shippers they will be more likely to work with you if you're an agent for a brokerage that's been in business for a while. The best way of finding shippers is by cold calling them. If you become an agent, they will help you finding prospects that you can call. After you learn the ins and out of brokering and have a decent book of business then think about getting your broker authority. Once you are a broker you are not liable for a load in transit if you go about everything legally and accordingly.

Hello, where can a person go to work as an agent, because everywhere I've looked asked you to have one to two years of experience or have some $500.000 worth of clientele. So where can a person coming out the gate start?

If you bring nothing to the table how is anyone to take you seriously over more qualified prospects? There's never a shortage of wannabe brokers. How badly do you want it?
