Can someone please explain about " having your own authority " to me? Also I want to know whether you can have your own authority without having bought a truck yet? I am new in trucking and have been driving for 4 months now. I am a lease driver with the company I went to school at. The payment are so high and I am planning a way out once I saved up enough money and buy my own truck. I guess I want to start working on my authority first if that is possible and once everything is set I will be out. I am making decent money as a lease driver but I want to make more...Any help or advice would be appreciated

You're best bet is to wait at least 2 years to get a better picture of having your own authority. You won't make much with having your own authority than being leased to someone. But if you insist, crawl before you can walk.

You cannot complete your authority until you have provided the required insurance, so you cannot get it too far in advance.

Being a new driver, can you explain to me how you became a L/O frsh out of school?
Did you already have some type of trucking experience that lead you down this path?rda2580 Thanks this. -

Sure. You can max all of your abilities and make a little more than being leased to someone. But how many more roles you have to be a part of just to have your own authority for 1 truck and trailer. I don't know even know if it's possible to compensate all of the extra work involved.

How would you know, have you done it?77fib77 Thanks this.

Well, for the most part yes, but for example me, I would just go nuts, having some young kid dispatcher, who have never been on the road, taking care of me and 10 other trucks. I know for sure, he won't negotiate each each load trying to maximize my profit and hometime.
That was about spot market. If you leased to a carrier, who has dedicated work, which keeps you busy, then yes, own authority is not worth itMikesallah Thanks this. -
You can get your authority just use a pickup truck to insure and start all the requirements like fill out employment app on yourself, join drug testing group, and other requirements, but why would you want to? takes about 2 weeks after insurance is valid, you can do the application on the computer anytime for 300.00 and join ooida and they will file the process agents for free for you. As soon as the application hits the federal register, your phone will ring off the hook with people wanting to help you for a fee, insurance, irp, ifta, factoring etc. the only thing you really need assistance with is the drug testing and background check on you app for employment to work for your company.
