You might consider a glider.......if budget allows. Neither one listed is an inexpensive truck. Spending a little more for a more reliable truck at that point might be a moot point to the bank.

I thank the last year for the small grill was 1978 but Big Rickie's 8V would run 92 MPH on a good day's. Also toted about 400 gallons of fuel in twin rectangular tanks. Thanks for the post, brings back memories.

Not to mention the memories of engines that breathed air naturally and burned fuel properly. No computer crap technology anywhere.
On many good evenings when the air cools, those engines would make music when cruising with everything in balance. Sometimes champing at the bit to run for the 100...
Most of the time on the older rigs your foot was on the floor flat. You took pain meds sometimes or drank a beer or two to ease the problem.
The others were right, you could fix them anywhere. No shops needed for the most part. If you lost your coolant because your heater core blew, in winter you could go 60 miles plus still carefully to a shop to fix er. Just a tad cold.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
Can you flip engines, and put the Cummins in the Pete? That's what I see wrong with this whole pic. That'd be the way to go....

So the DD15 is by most the most reliable motor for that time period. Are you just stuck on name?

Personally I would choose Cummins when it comes picking the engine. You are however buying a truck and in this case the Peterbilt is the best choice IMO.
Both these engines produce pretty much the same power and torque between 1000-1400rpm but the 2.53 rear end on the T660 is going to make that Cummins feel weaker than the MX at low speed. Another aspect of the Peterbilt I like more is the cab size. The T660 has a very narrow cab making the space between the 2 seats much smaller. Easier to get something on the passenger seat but I'd choose the more spacious cab. Less miles and bigger fuel tank is a bonus. -
RUN from that paccar. Cummins I'm not real familiar with but I've heard its a pain in the ### to work on from more than one tech. Out of the new epa10 engines the dd15 has given us the least problems. If I was going newer it would be a dd15.
Out of the 2 you listed go with the cummins. Going to cali glider is out of the equation
Anything with a class action lawsuit like the paycrap, I would not even consider it. Please read up on here about the mx, there's way more hate than love for it. Doesn't have to have that round oval on the hoodLast edited: Jun 2, 2016
