So I have completed a 3 week course at a non-company associated school. I failed my CDL test once, and I am re-taking it next week. My concern is that I only get 2 hours of additional practice before my next test. I asked if I could pay for more time, but they refused because they have too many students right now and not enough instructors. When I took the test before, I passed the pre-trip and driving on the test track, but my backing was awful. I hit cones, went over time limits, went over boundary lines, and was encroached when I finally could make it in the box--2 hours isn't going to fix all that. I don't think I'm gonna pass the second test.
Has anyone ever given up on their private school and signed on for company sponsored training after they failed? I don't like the idea of signing a contract. but at least now I have a better idea of which companies to avoid. I can't afford to pay the $4,000 to take the course over again. The school isn't awful or anything, but they are severely under staffed and basically treat the students like a burden when they ask for more help. Out of like 35 students, I've only known 2 who passed the first time...
Going from private school to company sponsored training?

Here's a tip. Go hook to any kind of trailer with a car or pickup. Boat, utility, uhaul, anything. And practice all you can. Yes size matters, but the concept is the same. Most folks fail backing because they fail to grasp the concept and just haven't had enough practice to grasp the concept. The more backing you do the more it becomes instinctive.

I'm curious if you don't mind...what kind of private school? Community college, or something specific like roadmaster, etc.?
-
But I have no idea how to hook...I've never done that before...
It's called Heavy Metal Truck Training in MNcrimedoc96 Thanks this. -
Woah, sorry, about the hooking, I'm an idiot, with a car
I mean I can't hook a truck, but a regular car, sure

$4000 didn't teach you to backup the first time, but it did teach you to bend over. Geez man, Hire on with one of the mega carriers and let them teach and pay you to learn. Give them their year or however long it takes to pay them back, then find something you really like if they don't please you.

Are you saying your school didn't teach you how to hook the tractor to the trailer?
-
Thanks, I mean I feel bad I couldn't pass the first time (and I don't feel confident about the second...), but I think this is my only option. The instructors at the school were great, but I just don't feel like there are enough of them.

They showed us videos, but I haven't done it before. Is that bad? They said the company we hired on with later would deal with that.

Millis would be a good one to go to. Better than all the megas etc.
