What is your accelerator positioning procedure on start up? My manual says "Full depression" then "Hold at 1/2 position" for start up. The engine starts much faster this way than with no pressure on the accelerator. Others who start my truck, like my mechanic, don't do the procedure and the starter has to work longer to achieve start up.

Let the fuel atomizer on start up. Once started keep the rpm up a little till it smooths out. Then idle.

pretty much all diesels start in the full fuel position. the governor then pushes the throttle back. this is for mechanical engines and early computer controlled engines as well.
