Floating gears in car transmissions is not very easy. But the ones in the diesel pickups are kinda like syncro'd medium duty transmissions. It was pretty easy to do but Im sure the syncro's where toast by the time I sold it.
FinkPloyd, NavigatorWife and Giuseppe Ventolucci Thank this. -
I use the clutch from 1st to 2nd but float the rest. As long as I hold it against the next gear while the RPMs fall, it goes right into gear when it should. But if I try to time it, like I do in a truck, it can grind.
bottomdumpin and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Yup. Floating a car transmission tends to be really hard on your syncros. You don't get the same feedback that you would in a truck if you don't do it perfectly, so you don't learn to do it properly and the wear that should go on the clutch goes on the syncros .

I remember my pops trying to float the gears in my brothers old VW bug when I was little. Sounded like the transmission was gonna fall out from under the car. He finally agreed with me that the VW wasn't built quite like a Pete
Zeviander, Blackshack46, bottomdumpin and 2 others Thank this. -
I float in both my 95 2.3L Ranger, and my 92 4.9L F150.
GF can't do it, tho.bottomdumpin and Giuseppe Ventolucci Thank this. -
Yea you can. I have pic's of my 'Cuda on my other PC. Had the pistol grip shifter, float all day.

A lot more fun and precise as well if you know how to use them.
I rented a Chrysler 300 to go to Vegas. It had a dial for the gear selection, I'm going wtf is this? lolFriday, passingthru69, Giuseppe Ventolucci and 2 others Thank this. -
I spend all night driving a manual tranny (preference), but that being said, I refuse to buy a car anymore with a manual. I'm off the clock then, time to get lazy.
NavigatorWife, GenericUserName, Bob Dobalina and 1 other person Thank this.
