I've been around the block in the intermodal world.
Safety used to be an afterthought, but it seems like a good number of companies are starting to come around.
Today my company is handing out the first portion of their safety bonus - $1250 for OO's and $750 for company. I missed out on this installment because of a BS lane usage violation I got (2nd ticket ever in 25+ years) at 294/94 merge .We also get clean inspection bonuses - I've racked those up over the years.
What does your company do to encourage/incentivize safety?

Don't hit anything and you will still have your job. That is usually incentive enough.

There are too many steering wheel holders out there nowadays for this to still apply, in my opinion. Guys who care are getting much to rare for them to not be recognized - and I think most companies realize that now..RERM Thanks this.

They give you a truck with matching paint

I talked to a company driver at Central States a few weeks ago and he didn't even know about our safety bonuses. He's been there for 2.5 years with zero tickets/ violations! You should've seen his face. LolAnthony Ruther Thanks this.

They just announced the company safety bonus last month, it used to be a $0.10 kicker in my hourly pay.
The owner op bonus has been around for years, back to when i was a OO up in minneapolis -
If I was a company and look at drivers to hire, I would want the older ones who have been around because if anything they would have accumulated as I think I have a bag of tricks to stay out of or get out of trouble that happen. Once in a while when I read about wrecks that are preventable I consider it such a waste.
If young and immigrant drivers need a incentive to buy safety then it's not exactly good. I suppose as a survivor of my own years of being extreme I would lean on being safe as the most important part of trucking. And the best part too.
I would sometimes decide the storm conditions be too marginal or risky on some mountain range I have to cross to make an appointment for say in Salt Lake by morning and inform company I'll stay put in somewhere safe to preserve life, the truck and most importantly the load. I don't think there is any company that is worth working for has given me any trouble about that. I don't mind running the cabbage in a foot of snow provided the bigger reward is moving out of the overall storm into better weather to the east so we can really get up and go. -
my co. offer's sends out a mass text every month awarding a $300 bonus to 3 drivers... they give out $300 to each clean inspection bonus.. they run these promo's with inspections every now and then especially around the announced blitz (3 times a year -- ($500 bonus to any clean inspection bonuses)).. every now and then, they give out dispatch bonuses. thats about all i can think in terms of safety.

They used to give us $50 for each Level 1 that got a sticker, in 3 yrs, only two of us got a sticker, they stopped the program. Otherwise, if the paint don't match, don't bother clocking in.

My company tells me "you better do it right or you're going to lose the company" Wait, that's me telling me.
