Do they sell diesel generators that are that small, or are they a lot more expensive? Haven't really looked into this.

Diesel ones last longer but cost a lot more. Like 2 or 3 times the price

i'm just going to point out that MOST generators are illegal to use on a truck per the reg's
not saying it's right or wrong and you will or will not get busted for it just that the rules do cover them and the only portable generator that is ok is the Honda 3000 and by the reg's you do need to change it a little

You have never bought an engine have you? The APU engine is reliable. The engine doesn't go out at the drop of a hat, a cat platinum rebuild is around 28k, a complete crate motor 20 k won't touch.

I went with the small Honda gasoline version rather than a diesel one because it is lighter and costs far less. I don't use it all that much. Also the truck I use it on is too old to justify an apu. If I eventually buy a new truck, a full blown apu will be on it.

    Dominick253 and BoostedTeg Thank this.

I have had a Yamaha EF2000 on the truck for some time. Best thing I ever did. Mounted in it's own box on the frame rail, and can run right inside the box with the side panels removed, so it is protected from weather. I run the cord from it to the Xantrex inverter/charger under the bunk and it keeps batteries fully charged. That same line is hooked up to the oil pan warmer in the winter. It takes care of a window A/C unit I use. No one has ever questioned what is in the box. Easy to remove for maintenance and use for other projects around my property.

It is quite legal to carry DOT approved containers of gasoline. You can carry auxiliary fuel used as "materials of trade" to power auxiliary equipment. You can carry up to 8 gallons of gasoline and be in full compliance with no hazmat problems.
