To be honest I know 1.20 a mile will pay the bills, but you need to average 1.40 a mile to be running better than a company driver running 10k miles a month

To me $1.20 isn't worth all the BS involved with running your own truck but it is for a lot of people.
If I couldnt lease a truck through and then onto Schneider I'd probably still be a company driver somewhere. No way I'd be on some contract running for $1.20.. no way jose!
I can make that kind of money it not more by being a company driver.
If someone has a paid off truck that never breaks down $1.20 could be okay but thats kinda asking for a lot lol. -

.90 cpm is what companies were paying in the late 1990's, when fuel was around $1.15 per gallon, new Michelin tires were under $300.00 each, and shop labor at Kenworth was $40.00-$45.00 per hour. I bought a 5 year old T-600 from the KW dealer with just over 400k on it for $16,500.00 in 2002 also. See what a 5 year old truck goes for today.

A lot of New drivers I run into and talk to ( I seem to talk alot) are happy to be picking their own freight and running faster even if they make about what they could as a company driver, then when it gets harder to run those same rune they were is when they quit. 2 or 3 months tops.

I believe it might have been @CaptainDaveG who mentioned the importance of having money saved as you come up to speed on the IC program.
Given the reduction in freight on the board it sounds like you have to be a savy businessperson who is capable of developing a business strategy and who tracks their costs closely so they can understand the potential profit. Many especially newer drivers just don't have the ability to be successful in that scenerio.
Hopefully things pick up and they bring on higher skilled IC's I hope the program continues to improve for all.Last edited: Jun 20, 2016

Just by requiring a large deposit, that will keep most out of this program.
