Northern Mechanic: There is no vertical bolt. I know what you are talking about, the same kind of mechanism is on my car but there is no bolt. It looks like there was a place where there was a bolt but it isn't there now. I am going to loosen the bolts and lift the whole bracket with a bottle jack and
see about getting the vertical bolt from a wrecking yard.

Ludwi: The sound is not tapping, it is almost like a sheet metal sound.

T800h: What you are saying seems possible. Did you replace the bearings?

Thanks everyone for the help. I was going to get my authority this week so this is a real bummer but hopefully it is minor. And I know it could be worse I am glad I am not out in the boonies a long way from home.

Yours may be different than mine too. Mines an A and thought maybe yours might be the same.

Woohoo! Problem fixed! It was the belts. As soon as I tightened them down the noise
went away. I sure am glad I didn't go to a mechanic-that would have been embarrassing.

Northern Mechanic: I found the adjusting bolt, thanks for the info.
Thanks to everyone for the help.

Don't need a wrecking yard for that fan belt adj bolt. It's just a 3/8" coarse thread. Forget how long , maybe 3-4 inches.

Get you a length of hose to use as a stethoscope to pinpoint the noise.

Replaced a fan hub once for a knocking sound and it turned out to be the dang belts instead.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

Typed at same time! Good it's fixed.

Oh, and use a nut on that bolt too as a locknut when you get tension set.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

How did the belts make a clanking noise?

I have never sen a lock nut on that threaded rod. Loosen the four nuts, tighten the belts with the threaded rod, lock down the four nuts holding the fan assembly, then back the rod off.
