Was the shooter gay, too? I thought the shooter was straight, but the nightclubs patrons were all gay. I had heard the shooter had been on the FBI watchlist, and was still on the no-fly list

If the reports are true that he had visited the place several times, then he could fit the clinical definition of Homophobia. Another famous case may have been The Doodler. Someone started a fire at a gay bar in Louisiana in the early 1970s that killed 30 people. It was believed to have been started by someone that was kicked out earlier.
