So ever since I've worked for my dad's construction company. Being around 18 wheelers/ dumptrucks, and heavy equipment and operating them. I've always wanted to drive for a career. And being around the heavy equipment side of thing I want to do heavy haul. But everyone's gotta start somewhere before you can get there. I guess since thinking everything over for a while my dream is to be a o/o with a bigger company affiliate. To get there one day here's my plan:

    1. Get my permit (I'm currently working on getting my cdl permit so I wouldn't have to worry about doing that at the school)

    2. Find a starting company. (I'm really considering joining on at prime with there flatbed division.)
Reason for really thinking about going with prime is there psd and tnt program.

    3. Be with prime for 1 year at least. (To pay for schooling and get time behind the wheel.)

    4. Decide where i want to be. (After the years up decide if I want to stay with them as a company driver or go somewhere else.)

    5. Learn to run a business and to look at my truck as a business. start to take some business classes (so I will know how to handle a business. As well as talk with o/o and see how to look at my truck as a business.)

    6. Decide if im ready to be a o/o. (After about 2 or 3 years under my belt decide if I'm ready to become an o/o.)
Get financials together and see if I have enough start up capital, enough to overhead for truck, trailer, inspections, needed repairs to get everything legal, ect..

This is the plan thus far, any helpfull tips and criticism would be greatly appreciated. I also know you can only take it 1 step at a time but I would like to have a plan on how I am going to accomplish these things.

Nice to see someone coming in with a plan.
I think all of your objectives are reasonable and with some work you could follow that plan to a T.
Don't cross out other avenues though, trucking in general is such a broad spectrum that most people find their way into areas of the career they never would've guessed.

Choosing companies is very similar. Everyone has something bad to say about every company, but everyone is different. Find what works for you.

Welcome aboard, good luck in your chase.

I have experience in then just not otr time his lowboy is always tied up moving equipment or I would take my driving test in it. It's a 1994 359 Pete with a Detroit and a 10 speed. The trailer they pull is a stepdeck style lowboy with dove tail and ramps. I have driven it from time to time on job sites but I've mostly been in the 2 dumptrucks. Those being a 69 mack r600 with a 5 speed and a 76 mack r600 that has the 5 speed h pattern twin stick. (Nothing like making guys jaws hit the ground when your shifting in reverse .)
I have been exploring the vast variety of trailer people pull. Everything from reefer to 4 tire slide decks. It all intriguessential me. I've spent a lot of time researching companies. And found like you said someone will always have something bad to say but not all.
