You don't have to be faster than the bear, you just have to be faster than whomever you are with.

 

My in laws live up the road from where this happened and my family and I have camped on panache lake for 50 years. Never have I had to punch a bear!

 

255 grain in super .45 with 1350 feet per second out of a NM Govt Barrel. Flat nose jacket from Buffalo Bore.

I wont even think about punching. It might just bite my fist off. And then that will be really bad.

 

At work I keep a can of bear spray with me, although I think an 18" adjustable wrench or a 12 lb sledge would do the trick as well.

 

I'd go with a 10mm Magnum Glock myself.

 

Sort of sounds like a trucker's tale to me, but who knows...
