Why would you rather sit and post questions and keep trying every single thing someone suggests that knows nothing about the problem. This original question was really a waste. It takes ten minutes to pop the altenator off and go get it tested. To sit and guess on something like this makes no sense; I would also suggest torching any Volvo, or send it over to the knit wit towel heads, they can pull start them with their camels when the batteries die. lol

And...running the truck for a few minutes certainly does NOT bring the batteries anywhere close to full charge.

Actually makes it worse since it takes more than 5 minutes of running to equal what was taken out of the batteries to start the truck. Voltage looks good because its just a surface charge on the batteries.

    OK, OK,
    Calm down people.
You can have the correct voltage 13-14 but have no charge. What you need to know is how many amps the alternator is supplying. Which is the key. If you look at every light bulb, fan and even the invertor (in american - inverter) of your truck the unit of power is Amps or watts. Look up ohms law. Your alternator should be in the range of 150 amps, maybe more, may less. No amp output no charge. By the way a reman alternator is $250 cdn at Oakville Starter and he has them on the shelf. Find an amp meter measure of the back of the alternator then at the batteries and compare, should be close.

 :D:D:D:rolleyes: Man this made my day

No insult or anything like that to the poster who accidentally revived the thread. It is easy enough to do. Besides it is most likely the ground wire from the alternator to the starter. Sometimes the bolt works loose on the starter and you get a voltage drop. You can see it when you test it. Just crawl underneath and check the starter wiring connections. When this happens usually The alternator shows 14 or so volts and the battery shows 13 or so.
