Thanks for all the wonderful advise. I retired from the military in April after 30 years. Looking for a company that will provide me training and have a career with. I have only been retired for a short while, seems like I should be on the go, that is something my wife is used to and my children are all grown up. Trucking will give me the chance to see what America looks like. I have been talking with Jim Palmer, at one point they seem to be interested and I have been told they are not doing CDL training. I have also spoken with WIL TRANS and O&S. It was the same recruiter. Prime looks pretty good, have been research on KNIGHT and CRST. Haven't heard a lot of good about CRST. Leaning towards Jim Palmer , Prime and maybe Knight. I will resubmit app with Jim Palmer to see what happens. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with me.

    Jim

Where are you wanting to be based out of? Is your wife going to want to ride with you at times?

There are a couple of these that really enjoy those that have served in the Military. There are a few of these that offer CDL training. By the way Thank YOU for your service. I grew up a Military Brat and Married a Seabee! :) I chose these as they seemed to offer the best at what we were looking for. Good Luck in your search. Jim Palmer would be a great company if Prime was not involved. I don't know what is going on with the CDL Training with Jim Palmer unless in the past few months they have had a lot of drop outs as I know the classes beginning in March to now had been full almost every week. I also know that Jim Palmer really doesn't have much of a say as you have to go through Prime on everything. Good luck to you and I know that you will find something that you like and will be able to do and a company that is for you!

You are welcome, 30 years few by while i was in the military. thank you for all the info. I will check out the links you sent . My wife doesn't plan to ride with me. I live in San Diego, would like to get with a company that I would be no problem getting home after being out 4 to 6 weeks.

James65 I would advise you look into Schneider National because of where you live there aren't many that have the customer base that can get you home. However, do to Schneider's customer base they should have better opportunities.

I would suggest Crete Carrier out of Lincoln, NE but I don't think they have enough presence in your area.

Best of luck and thank you for your service.

Palmer is ok. Slow trucks and On Guard though. Prime has always got loads.

If you do either you should do Prime and cut out the middle man! From what I have been seeing Jim Palmer is just a name on the side of the truck that is owned by Will Trans. Prime pretty much calls the shots. The Jim Palmer dispatcher doesn't get you loads he still has to go through Prime first! Too many hands in the pot.

Jim Palmer uses full size trucks and Prime pushes the lightweights that are cramped inside; very little storage and have to take the passenger seat out to install a decent refrigerator.
Look at Jim Palmer trucks on the website in their photo gallery. @James65

@Chinatown I didn't realize there was a difference in the truck sizes. As when I have seen Prime trucks they look the same on the outside. Hubby has a Freightliner cascadia at Jim Palmer. His trainer had a peterbilt and it was smaller than the freightliner. For me the freightliner is even smaller than the trucks we have been in before. Even when we use to drive for prime back in the early 2000's our truck was bigger. The freightliner he is driving doesn't have the room to really install a nice fridge. Plus the $500 Prime charges isn't worth it. We just go a 12v one from Wal-Mart.

Here's an old post from a Prime driver in a lightweight truck."Well, in a LW truck there is no giant cabinet that you can hang your clothes in. So I bought two plastic cabinets from walmart. In these two cabinets I keep all my clothes in as well as all my shower accessories. I have it bungeed with these bungees so that they won't move. Also, joined together the cabinets create a nice flat surface. That flat surface is my kitchen table. I do all my cooking on top of them. Its my only flat surface that is solid. There are no cabinets and the space is very limited. I recommend you remove the passenger seats in the LW trucks, it really opens the place up."
