Hello all. I know I've been asking a lot of questions lately, but I have one huge hurdle that I think I would need to get over to get my foot in the door as far as trucking - my employment history. This year alone, I have had six jobs (still at my sixth one right now with plans to get a seventh one and working two jobs). For one reason or another, the previous five jobs didn't work out. Well, one job was nothing to do with me as the company closed down, and two jobs I left to pursue greener pastures (including the job which closed down), which didn't work out. One job I just flat out left because I felt the help wasn't there for me. But all last year and the year before, I was gainfully employed (well, if you wanna call being an independent contractor gainfully employed), and I know trucking companies want three years. It wouldn't be until next year before I'm in a classroom ready to pursue my dream of being a truck driver, so I ask - will this job hopping make me unemployable? I know for a fact that if someone were to give me a chance, they would get a great man out of me and I wouldn't up and leave because after all, it is my dream. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Am I unemployable in the eyes of the trucking industry?

here's an example of requirements, most companies show something like this on their website. Bottom line yes you can get into trucking IF you to stick with one of your non-trucking jobs for at least 6-months minimum I'd say, and don't give notice there until you have applied, been accepted by a trucking company, AND have orientation date set. This is from Prime:
- Previous employers and references will be checked and must be verifiable.
- A stable work history and good references (for experienced drivers no more than 3 employers in last year)
- Must provide no less than 10 years of driving work history, non-driving work history for the past five years (you will need this at orientation to complete paperwork)

Wiley Sanders Truck Lines will probably hire you.
Your choices will be limited, but you're employable.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
If you have a CDL and a pulse you are employable in the eyes of the trucking industry.
Seriously, I don't see anything in your employment history that would keep you from getting hired. So long as all your employment history during the relevant time period can be verified, you should be good to go.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Interesting information about Prime there that you noted. On my short list once I get my Class A shortly from a truck driving school near where I am from. In my case, worked for 14 years for my previous employer as a Class B coach driver. Spotless MVR. But that ended in December '15. With the 7 month gap that I have, I have heard and read that Prime may shy away from that. They are leary on the drivers that have those unemployment gaps - whether or not it was through no fault of one's own, etc, etc. So, while I would say that my employment record "was" or "is" stable for the most part, Prime may see it differently. Will keep my fingers crossed, and if Prime passes - will knock on Wil-Trans door as a brand

Actually most companies won't really care that much even if you had tons of jobs because the companies that are going hiring you are pretty much going to be crap anyways they just want to know if you have DUIs do drugs and if you have a criminal record the job thing is not really a big deal for them.Last edited: Jul 14, 2016
Western flyer and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
This is why the turnover rate for the trucking industry is so high! Prime considers someone who has left a job 3 times in the previous year stable? I wonder what they consider unstable work history? Yes, I know 4 jobs, but it was a rhetorical question.drvrtech77 and Mudguppy Thank this.

What if the companies you worked for have long been out of business? If the megas can not verify your employment and there is nothing on your DAC will they hire you?

There is nothing stating that any of the last 10 years worth of employers has to be verified. One is only required to provide that info. Who knows why? I don't. But the Feds require it. And if it is so the Feds can look it up, I'm sure they can get with the IRS and verify it with your tax returns. You did file your tax returns? Right?
