Maybe you should go get your own authority and then come back in 8 or 9 years and tell me how it is ?
Why is when someone states numerical facts people want to claim you're negative? facts are neither positive or negative so your statement isn't true. Nine years of your own authority would probably give you a different prospective. And some of your postings are inconstant of each other meaning you have no true position.
I have also examined and sampled the market of class8 trucks the only difference between my 33K and your 80K gross is the number of loads available the rates are about the same in all areas of my sampling. The only advantage/ disadvantage is you possibly could find something leaving your destination easier than I could.
But adding in the "back haul) cheap rate you are only deducting from the positive aspect of the out bound load.
What does this mean in the end ?? It means that your 175K gross income nets you the same lifestyle that my 75K income nets me. Theoretically speaking you are no better off than I am, I just work less.. -
my experience in freight and trucking. a good 90% of loads have been on the books for a month. buy the time it gets to the broker. it the broker another week to negotiate and get the load set up. and then it can still go south for what ever reason. and sometimes nobody finds out until the driver is checking in to pick-up the load.

He doesn't know that I'm going home. He knows thats my BUSINESS address, I could live 150 miles away. Point is, if you call amd say backhaul, they will lower the rate because they have leverage. They know you are wanting to get home- supply and demand. They have the load you need. Who wins?
Besides, most brokers don't care about where you are out of and why you're headed that way -
Why should I when I make as much or more money operating under my carriers authority?
And what numerical facts have you stated? You yourself said "It seems",.. which to me sounds like an assumption based on opinion.
As for your H/S vs my class 8 step,.. clearly you are not satisfied with the available freight and the rates for your market or am I not comprehending your meaning correctly? Where I am booking freight that pays above and beyond what I need. From Sept 8th 2015 to April 21st I managed to put away $100,000 cash. Not gross,.. not just net,.. but pay bills, maintenance, etc,.. and still cash away $3500 a week. No smoke and mirrors there,.. just facts.
I am happy,.. even in the current market I am still thriving and putting cash away,.. all the while operating in a cut throat market. I have adapted my working model to suite the needs of the market that I went after. I have made a niche for myself that is working.
And you are slightly off,.. I grossed $229k for 2014. Last year not so much. As for 2016,.. my projected gross income should be in excess of $250k if everything continues at the current pace. And thats working only 42 weeks. So say what you want,.. I am making it work. Black hood and all.
HurstSoDel, FinkPloyd, scottlav46 and 3 others Thank this. -
This is true many times in my segment. I often go to pick up equipment that has been purchased months ago. And when I arrive to pick it up,.. they tell me that yeah,. they sold it months ago,.. its been paid for. They were just waiting for him to pick it up. So I assume they tried to get it shipped cheap. No one bit. So when it came time,.. I saw a rate posted that I liked or was close enough that I thought I could negotiate into a better rate and made it work for me.
So I agree,. a lot of freight is just sitting right now trying to be moved as cheaply as possible. Some of it gets moved,.. the rest will sit until the rate becomes profitable enough for the smarter guys to move it.

You missed it just a little. I'm not satisfied with the trucking industry as a whole. Uselss regulations have grown exponentially since I first got my authority. I'm sick of the flip flop, pajama pants wearing beta males who infected trucking like a herd of locus. And have the fortitude of a turd. I'm also tired of all the stupid cut throats who have crawled into every market I enter.
I spend a good year cultivating a direct customer to where I get decent (not great) pay rate and some new moron MC number comes along and destroys it in less than than thirty days.
That's great if you have a 100K in your account that just means that when you have stroke and they find you three days later at some pee smelling T/S, your wife will have plenty to spend on her new boyfriend.
Now back on topic H/S and class 8 freight pay about the same per mile. Using the numbers you provided I came up with your hourly pay of 18.33 and hour before income tax if they're not skewed.
OK money but not worth all the time you claim you spend gone IMO.
If trucking rates had kept up with inflation you have idea what you'd be making with less effort?
This is one of the few jobs I've seen go backwards pay wise. I'm tired of the whole industry mainly the government end and useless people end of it. Trucking sucks I only hope my personal involvement last long enough to find my next adventure or I get the house paid for. -
LOL, oh man...
