Looks like a brake shoe piece. The wear is on the outer curve.

This was a trailer tire blow out last June in N.Las Vegas at the Petro, went just as I was exiting the cab, to go inside. I had this same tire repaired earlier that morning when I dropped and hooked at the yard, bad valve stem, like so loose it rattled around in the rim.
Notice how deformed the rubber is around the blowout area. My theory is somebody hot braked this trailer to the point where it almost caught fire. Does that explain the disfigured rubber? It was the inner tire. Would it explain the valve stem warping, and wanting to fall out? Hmmmmm........

When you blow a Volvo steeraxle air bag. At 70mph. In WY. At night. On a bridge with an expansion joint failure. On the way to SLC. With FedWrex Freight. I loved my life at Hill Bros.

well, upon a closer look there's 3 tractors in tow so I'll assume the axle was pulled on each to prevent mileage showing up on the odometer? why the factory cover wasn't put back in place idk.

The way I understand it they pull the axle shafts so that only thing turning is the wheel ends, instead of the rearend gears and drivelines, transmission, etc. I was told they do that because when you only have the output shaft on the trans turning it doesn't circulate oil enough to lubricate, that is better accomplished with input and all others turning during normal operation. But that's just what I've heard, maybe someone who knows for sure will say something. I don't know if there is a cover made for this, I would have used a steel plate and gasket if I was the one doing it, rather than using plywood.

It was probably pulled because the trucks have automatics that require the axle be pulled while towing or it voids the warranty
