I've heard that they are phasing out the manual trans with this #### automatic. Has anyone else heard this?

Some of the mega fleets might be. Easier to get and keep drivers if they can't leave because they have restricted cdl.

Local road construction company here switched to all automatics. We are not talking a couple of trucks, they may have 20-30 on one job. We love it when they get the contract to do a road. Number one is that we now have to spend a week or more moving their equipment to the new job site. Two is that we are normally the trucks delivering the concrete pipe and box culverts along with the bridge beams. And three, they are fast. They do in 3 months what it takes other companies 2 years to complete.

As for the reason for the switch, they now do not have issues with broken axles, drivelines or grenaded transmissions or rearends. Ever since the switch they have not had any issues with this at all. With the manual transmissions they constantly had breakdowns of this type. Now the mechanic has the time to keep the machinery moving instead of always having to repair something on the trucks. These guys are grossing 132k with belly dump trains and or side dumps. They also move their own hot plant and crusher, some of that is not light at all.

What do you mean by restricted CDL?

If you test in a truck with an automated transmission you are not cleared to drive one with a manual in certain states.

Lots of companies are going to them, even small ones. Takes a lot of bad driver habits out of the equation, and there is a real gain in fuel mileage.

    I can't say I blame the companies.
Finding a truck at a true starter company that still has a clutch brake can be a chore haha

I have nothing against autos. They work just fine but I enjoy going through the gears.

If it came down to two identical companies and one had autos and the other manuals, I'd take the manuals.
