Figured out how to keep the truck running without switching on the opti idle, another member on here told me this. Put the shifter in high and put it in the highest gear just in front of the gears so the truck thinks its in gear but its not. Now I had to rig a strap to hold it into that position, but the truck will run all night now.
BostonTanker Thanks this. -
I know for a fact this doesn't work not because Ive tried it. But because I have left the jake on over night by mistake before. On second thought I guess you could say that I tried it unintentionally

This wont work either. What would happen is that you would disable opti idle. But if the motor started at all it would still shut down after five minutes.Last edited: Aug 17, 2008

My new truck has this, and I had a frank discourse with dispatch about how I was going to take stupid truck back and demand another cause it nearly killed my dog when i left truck idling and ran into grab some food not knowing it had this stupid crap in tx at 98 degrees outside... turns out hitting the clutch when it was about to shut off worked... and one weeks later I had APU that auto turned on when the truck got too hot... I'm guessing dispatch didn't want another very angry call about my dog...

BrinkJ23,
To override the opti idle on the Detroit 60s series in the freightliners anyways. After you see Opti Idle light on the dash flashing then wait for the truck get ready to shut off. Before the truck get's ready to shut off you will see the opti idle and the check engine light flashing at the same time. Once you see that tap the fuel peddle once and that will override the opti Idle and the truck will staying running. Atleast that is how it worked on my 06 Columbia. I can't see why it would not be the same on your Volvo being that the opti idle is part of the engine system and you said you have a 60s series Detroit. They put that feature in there for shop mechanics when they are working on the truck. I hope this helped you...God Bless you ! -
The company i drive for has been using opti idle for years> The best way i have found to keep the engine running is to set temp and fan speeds so that it cannot reach the set temp ie: only one fan running on low speed and temp (on dashpanel)set to your preferred temp. Set opti idle temp higher or lower than that depending on if your heating or cooling.

You can try all kinds of different things on how to fool Opti Idle. I tried them all when it came out and for the 2 years we had it on our trucks. It's all in how the different companies have it set up. I tried the hood open but the 5 minute times shut it off. tried the trailer brakes and no tractor brakes and the 5 minute timer shut it off.
The 1st night I had it I was just falling asleep when it went to do it's shut down thingie, the idle came down then it shut off and the usual shaking woke me up in time to see a truck pulling out beside me and here I am thinking he's tearing my hood off! I bail out of the bunk blowing my horn and yelling at him on the CB. He comes back and I'm standing there looking at my new truck that doesn't have a scratch on it and he's looking for the hood on the ground also then he looks at me and asks if I have opti idle. I tell him yes and he asks if had the jake set. NOPE, I replied and he told me to set it and the truck wouldn't shake as much when it shut down. It's true but you just have to get used to it shutting down. Took me a week after trying all of the wives tales I had heard. Never noticed it once I got used to it! Besides that idle ticket you could get will piss the company off and I really don't think you want to pay that sized ticket!
Me, I'm in this to MAKE ,money not pay it in dumb idling tickets or have to put up with a company all up in my 6 because I figured some way to screw the opti idle! -
Buy a good mattres, you're probably sleeping on a junk 4 inch mattres.
Mine is thick and has the pillowtop top on it. Same as home, only smaller.
Only time I felt the truck shake was when I was forcing myself to sleep.
(I left the last s off, for savings) -
If all else fails try sticking a block of wood under the hood to prop it open just a little that worked on a company truck i had once. it over rides the idle shut down as if a mechanic had the hood up working on it. I don't know if all trucks have the switch under the hood or not.
