75% of $0.20 a mile is nothing.
19% of $135 an hour is pretty decent.
Unless you know how much time is involved and how much the truck is making in a day percentage means absolutely nothing.MidWest_MacDaddy and Ruthless Thank this. -
That's a good point. Maybe I should add a little more information. Most owner operators work off of X per mile rates
My idea of a decent rate in present market conditions in my area of hauling would be 2.50-3.00 per mile.
Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case it's more like 2.00-2.50 range. 'm under the impression the broker end is around 3.00-3.25 a mile.rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Keep in mind miles don't mean anything either if you have to sit for 6 days waiting to make a delivery on a 600 Mile load.Dominick253 and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this.

My guess is that anyone that votes for more than 20% is a broker
Dominick253 and MidWest_MacDaddy Thank this. -
I wanted to vote for Swift, can you add Swift to the poll?
-
Could very well be. I think some really don't understand or just ignore the cost of business as well.
Or maybe they are just so used to the sup standard types of brokers. -
I don't think percentage matters near as much as the rate they can pay the truck.
Real world examples:
If I get $1000 on 81 miles (power only)
Or $1450 on 123 miles (my step chains no tarps
$900 on 17 loaded miles (my step straps no tarp)
$1350 to bring my empty 10 wheeler to Central Park and sit around all night moving 1000' in, then 1000' out, then dh home.
-- with those #'s should I complain if the broker made more than x% ? I call the prices, so in my opinion I can't be mad if the broker makes more than a specific amount off a load.
also I don't care what they make, as long as I make what I need on it.
If you are stuck on "the broker makes too much" then you're one of the many that are hauling cheap freight for cheap brokers.
In that case: go get your own customers at rates you determine.
After all: it's so easy a broker can do it!
If you don't know how to get a good rate: it won't matter if a broker is involved or not. You are the one holding yourself back.spyder7723, rollin coal, Hurst and 6 others Thank this. -
I couldn't agree more. It doesn't matter if the broker is doubling his money, as long as you make good money, it doesn't matter.
If you're not making good money it still doesn't matter. Either take the cheap load or find a better one.Ruthless Thanks this. -
This is pretty much what I had been trying to say to him,.. you said it much better than I could have.
If I agree on a rate,.. then I am getting what I feel is a fair amount to do the job. What another operator or broker earned on the same job is irrelevant to me. I did the job for what was profitable for me. I cant be upset if money was left on the table. I made my deal.
