No Fortycal, it's not a matter of whether I'm planning my fuel stops effectively so ill politely disagree since I can pretty much pull up any fuel price in the country with a flick of the wrist, finger or whatever. But it does help that I get Very generous FSC. I've got more technology on board than you can shake a stick at, but I won't bore you with the details. But I understand its probably your MO to criticize a fellow trucker without knowing the facts. Question...has or does anyone FUEL on a reg basis at SAMS CLUB ?? Assuming you're a member.
case in point. As I type I'm going up to Mass to unload. We all know that fuel prices up there are high, really high, so I do my snooping around, and just to give you an example. TA at Willington CT is 4.299 gal approx. so I do my checking around and low and behold a Sams Club that's only a few miles away is selling DSL for 3.769 gal. Now what's wrong with that picture. Lets not get into all this fuel futures nonsense, and confuse it with oil futures. That has nothing to do with daily fuel prices and certainly not to the extent I'm illustrating here. Please don't attempt to tell me there's something unique about Sams Club sources of fuel, cos there isn't any. I know the fuel distribution business better than most of you.
A previous writer had the right idea that the truck stops of this world jack up the price and then attempt to give us
a form of "Mexican" discount. My whole point on this which most of you missed is that we need a much more uniform transparency instead of all this BS that we are getting. Sure, you can call up TA/Petro FlyingJ etc etc but I don't trust those folks anymore to tell the truth than I do the Govt or DOT. Yes, fuel prices will vary from area to state but the above example is a classic example of the greed of truck stops. Keep it simple guys, I'm not looking for some pseudo sophisticated explanation cos there ain't one. How about the truck stops are greedy baracudas and the answer is to shop around get creative and beat this lot to the punch. After all its supposed to be a free market, but price fixing goes on all the time in many industries. This is no exception Its amazing how much secrecy goes on within the trucking industry regarding very important topics. Good luck

i try to buy fuel wherever i can get it cheapest in the area i am. now my situation i move around several "local" area's i may be in one area for a few days and then another for a few days moving gravel, rock, scora ect from one place to another within that one area
i try to watch fuel prices and fuel as smart as i can but in some instances if you in a high fuel price place for a few days its cheaper to bite the bullet and put fuel on where its expensive than go 100 miles out of the way to save a few bucks on the pump price.
but say for instance im in say area "A" for a couple days area "A" average fuel prices are 4.19 per gallon say i know that the next day i will be going to area "B" and area "B" fuel prices are 4.09 per gallon ill only put enough fuel on to get threw the time i am in area "a" and fuel all the way up when i get to area "b"
unfortunately sometimes your choices are limited to expensive fuel or expensive fuel. because we all know trucks don't run well off air.
now on the big chains
the other day i was in a area fuel prices were 4.09 per gallon i went to another area today where fuel prices are 3.99 a gallon on the way i went by a loves where fuel was 4.13 per gallon. i had a 1/4 tank of fuel on when i got to the loves and i slept at the loves on my way to the other place. i also took a shower. i could have gotten a free shower if i fueled at loves but $10 for a shower is cheaper than paying a extra .14 cents per gallon if i pumped 150 gallons of fuel at loves that "free" shower would have cost me a $21
now if i really wanted to play there game and pumped the minimum 50 gallons of fuel i could have gotten my shower for $7
my point being though that your still paying for your "free" perks by fueling at the big truck stops
now obviously being that we spend thousands of dollars a month on fuel its something to look closely at. last month if i could have saved 5% on fuel it would have been $250 x that by 12 months in a year would be $3000 -
In retrospect, its best to diversify and keep your options open. There's pros and cons about having a fuel card and sticking to a closed network of stations, truckstops.
In future its going to be an advantage to carry $$$ so that I can stop at wherever and fill up on their cash price. I'm going to scale down NASTC to a certain extent and buy at the cheapest spot at where I am. I'll just do my due diligence and find the best and cheapest place. It will be interesting if I can achieve that at a Sams Club, where fuel prices are pretty good. That's assuming I can get under their canopy !! LOL. See how it pans outMNdriver Thanks this. -
Good Sam has a program .8 cents off cash price, Pilot, J, Loves, etc. best card ever.

seems how this thread came back up. i still have not really done anything fuel card related. i did get a credit card with a ok cash back program and run most my fuel threw that pay it off every month.
at the moment im loading many times a day out of the same location several month project me and several of the other owner ops on the job got a fuel suppler to bring out a tanker trailer drop it off and fill it with fuel. they come out and re-fill it after we empty it were getting our fuel about .40 cents less than the pump price. and its a 40 mile round trip to the nearest place to get fuel so it works out pretty good. -
Sounds like a heck of a deal.
