OGALLALA, Neb. (NSP Press Release) - A semi driver was arrested for motor vehicle homicide Sunday after a fiery crash in western Nebraska left five dead.
The multi-vehicle accident along westbound Interstate 80 near Brule in Keith County occurred just before 12:30 p.m. CDT. Troopers investigating the crash say the semi struck the rear of a van. The force of the collision pushed the semi and the van into three other passenger vehicles. Both the semi and the van involved in the initial crash were engulfed in flames. Five people in the van were killed.
The driver of the semi, 53-year-old Tony Weekly of Baker, Florida, was taken to the Sedgewick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado where he was treated and released. Weekly was then arrested on charges of motor vehicle homicide.
The names of the dead and injured are not being released at this time, pending notification of family.
East and westbound lanes of I-80 were closed with traffic diverted onto Highway 30 at Oshkosh and Ogallala.

The article wasn't clear, but it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out what happened. I tell ya', gonna have to start putting down portable rumble strips whenever there's a backup. Get these idiots to pay attention. Chalk up another one for cell phone and driving. I doubt the driver was sleepy at 12:30 in the afternoon. So sad that has to happen. Remember folks, when you're the last one stopped in a backup ( or a few rows in) watch them mirrors and leave a little space just in case.
