I'm starting my class A driving career with an otr company to get my experience under my belt. Who should I be aiming to work for eventually and who's the best?

    Where do you live, Wisconsin?
We need your location so we know the hiring area you live in.

That's for you to decide. Nobody can answer that question but you. It's good that you want to set goals but they have to be your goals. Like for me it was gasoline hauling and working for a major oil company. I found out what they required for a driver to work there and I worked at various companies to get there. Above all you've got to keep your record clean. Say that you want to haul specialized loads like explosives or radioactive loads. You go out and find out who does that kind of work and you get a job heading towards that. Get all the training you can so the end companies do not have to spend a lot of money to train you. The more you become specialized the more you become attractive to the better jobs. You need to become a driver in demand.

So sit down and think it over on what you want to do. If you're married get your wife involved. Where do you want to retire. Just don't think about the money but think about how you want to survive at retirement. And don't think in broader terms like just hauling freight because that's what you'll do, just haul freight. Put some thought in it and then we can help you trim it down. Good luck.

At what age would you like to retire? That would be a huge determining Factor

Which company do you plan to start with? There's dozens to choose from, depending on your location. Put your location on your profile.

"The best" is a highly subjective term. There is no "holy grail" for truck drivers. Why do I say that? Simple. Drivers do not think alike. We have different needs and wants.

For some, the ideal job is a union LTL company making multiple pick and deliveries during the day, while others prefer the linehaul side of LTL, driving from terminal to terminal during the night. You will also find drivers who wouldn't touch a union job if it were given to him. For me, linhaul LTL jobs would be very boring. especially when you have enough seniority to get on a specific run. Seeing the same stretch of road night in and night out would drive me even more insane than I am now.

Some drivers want to drive for Walmart, while other drivers can't or won't deal with the micro-management and almost infinite rules and policies.

Gashauler has his ideal job, while other drives wouldn't do his job for anything.

Some drivers love running coast-to-coast but I, for one, couldn't care less about running west of I-35.

For some, truck ownership is what they shoot for, while others can't hardly wait until they sell their truck and go back to being a company driver where all they have to do is drive.

There are many, many more examples but the short of it is this: there is no "One size fits all" for truck drivers. That is the beauty of the trucking industry...there is a job well-suited for every driver, but not every driver is well-suited for every job. You have to find your niche.
