I'm going to be buying a truck within a year. I wanting to do this mainly for the freedom. I've been company driver for 12 yrs. The last three as a trainer. I will be paying cash for the truck and will have about 20k set aside in maintenance acct. my wife's salary covers all bills. Only debt we have is mortgage. I want to work less. Lol. I want the freedom to work when I want. My question is what's the best route to achieve this? Running solely on load boards or is there companies you guys can recommend that will allow you to run when you want? Thanks for any help.

I am leased to a company that has its own loadboard. We can book loads off of other load boards if they pass a credit check.
Last two years I have worked six months each year. This year may be different as the rates aren't where they should be.
I like booking my own frieght, because nobody cares as much about me, as me.
Also, the company that I am leased to leaves me alone. I hear from them once a month or so.

I would not recommend it. You are going to be consumed by the other mistress, the truck. Your wife might grow to loathe the thing sitting in the yard.

Hang in there doing what you are doing. Pay your house off in a few years. Make that a goal.

We paid our home off in 8 years flat instead of 30. Then the rest of the debt in those days was in the tens of thousands and all of that got paid off.

You want to be absolutely debt free is what Im trying to teach you before you do anything like this. A blown engine ranges up to 30,000 dollars cash for a new one for example. Tires for the tractor is around 4000 dollars. Prior to first ice. Then winter is over you get a set for summer. If your winter tires or summer tires are good you can swap back and forth, keeping in mind positions they were on or just leave em on the wheel sets.

You want to be prepared with a lawyer to defend your freedom anywhere in the USA at a moment's notice. The police somewhere can take you away and there you are 2000 miles from home? Im just being a devil's advocate. There is no answers to all questions but there IS a way to watch life get destroyed in a few moments on the road depending on decisions made by all involved.

Im not here to give you a hard time. Im here to share with you that you have done well with your history, I urge you to stick to it. Pay the home off free and clear. Wife will like that, the feeling of security at home without worry that a bad week or weeks will threatend foreclosure.

Purchasing a truck now will dramatically increase your Tax problems each quarter and annually. If you do not clear your taxes... it's over.

I myself was a O/O for about 3 days on a nice little Midroof back in the 90's it was a sweet thing and meowed in the hills with that 400 cat. whoo.. but I had to give it back and walk away from it due to discrimination from the one man in charge of the entire purchasing program. Im glad I did then. It would have been a unholy mess. It would not be the last time I cross swords with discriminatory people. (Deafness) so...

It's all good. Get debt free first then build your money up. Maybe then you can have the tractor you know you need for the work you are about to do.

    Good luck!

To actually answer your question (shocking on Trucker's Report) Landstar and Roadrunner both have programs that let you pick your freight and run how you want. Also, try Mercer, Schneider National (they frown upon brining your own truck and would rather you L/P), Farm2Fleet, Interstate ( they are kinda secretive), CRST Malone, Western Express ( they will give you a selection of what they want you to run, but it is choices), Greatwide ( but I have no evidence to support how good/bad it is). So, make a list of Pros and cons and find what works for you.

I think if the main goal run less miles and work less hours you need to buy your own rig you need to buy your own trailer then have your own MC then you can load yourself up from the load board.
it going to be alright you will find few good brokers who you can hook up with
otherwise you will work for the company with the MC and dispatch and all of it will cost you money what you need make extra miles to pay for . plus it's not about Freedom again
If you got a wife she can easily take care of the paperwork so you need run a truck and talk to a broker.
