Grace Under Pressure (Sometimes It's Hard to Do)

    Friday when I was out helping a new driver go through the ugly learning curve we got to a stop that was in a small, but manageable to get around strip mall. Well for the most part you could get around. Anyhow we were I guess running late I didn't really know, because I never ran that route before. Anyhow were kind of middle of the route I guess and the customers out there in Maryland for the most part actually I thought were very nice and patient so kudos to them.

    So anyhow were at this stop and I know the guy I was helping was probably stressing a little and there was a beer truck in our way. He sees the beer truck and lets out a big expletive that was totally stress related and I understand I do. So I said "I got this it'll be alright."

    I calmly climbed out of our truck and politely asked the beer truck driver if when it was convenient to him if we could get around him. He was actually very nice about it (this was in Newark, DE) and he said "I have a delivery it'll take about 5 minutes and then I'll move so you can get around me the next stop will probably take me a half hour." He had two stops at the same strip mall. I said "No problem at all do what you gotta do thanks."

    The beer truck driver moved out of our way no problem and we were able to get around him and go on with our day. I hope I hope the guy who I was helping saw all that and learned how to manage a situation like that, no need to get mad or argue just show a little grace and don't go in there "You need to get out of my way right now." None of that it won't get you anywhere. Instead just be nice and understanding. I don't right now, but I used to carry gift cards for Subway with me maybe worth $10.00 a piece and if I had one I would have offered it to that beer truck driver for being nice and moving he may have not taken it, but it doesn't matter he would remember that and next time a GFS truck comes around if they ever met again he would move or what ever, just little tactful things like that help.

    I believe that's called "painting with a broad brush", and I'm not sure what that has to do with @Mike2633's point..?

    And kudos to you, @Mike2633 for teaching the newbies that a little patience and civility goes a long way. I used to teach the same thing back in my LTL days.

    Yeah, good work. You tend to find that out anyway as you go. I had several "route" jobs, and you run into the same people doing what you are doing. When I delivered eggs to grocery stores ( I know, it was a tough job) my biggest nemesis was "the milk man". Most of them were great guys, and they had a much harder job than I. So we'd work out a schedule, and they'd be gone by the time I got there. Well, you know trucking, for whatever reason, sometimes I'd round the corner and DARN, there's the milkman ( in the only dock, 1/2 hour wait, heck, I could have 2 more stops off by then) Well, I had 2 options, break down the pallet and "walk" them in, like 15 trips, or help the milkman unload, which was much quicker than wheeling them in. Just worked better that way.

    JReding, you are right, I painted with a broad brush! It had nothing to do with his point!
    It's just like Sears, 40 years ago they charges me $400.00 for a brake job on my car, at the time they were sued by the feds for deceptive practices for doing that to everyone! I despise Sears to this day and will not do business with them!
    Gordon Food Service treated me like crap that day, took 4 hours to pull off a straight load, then charged me $325.00 lumper fee! I have no use for them, and let everyone know what a piece of crap company they are?
    Yeah, the guy taught the trainee a good lesson, he still works for a bottom feeder company

    Two things.

    First off, the Beer man is being good. No problems. I don't have a problem. Now Mr Newbie exploding with swear words imply a hidden potential problem that needs to be explored further once you two get back to the company office to talk about this...

    Second off, I recall my dispatchers crying if they got stuck with a 90 dollar lumping bill. If you all are paying and handing over 300 dollars for a trailer, I missed out. I want some of that. Cash. I'll only charge 200. LOL.

    I have zero to do with that division and have never been to that warehouse before in my life that warehouse is fairly new. I know Springfield operates differently then that places does, I really can't comment on them because I don't really know how they do things on the receiving side.
