I understand in semi, but f it let them tailgate you. Theyll die and you wont even feel it. But in the car. Some people need to drive with purpose. When i am in the truck I pass cars more than semis, even when speed limit says 75. When I drive my impala, i only see semis in my mirrors and nobody tailgates me, there few bad apples sometime, but i speed up and change lanes.

That last 15 seconds was for finishing their text message and sending it. Now they have to pull out in front of everybody to make up the time they just lost.

I didnt go through all the posts here because I just found the thread after 7 pages of replies.

However, I'll tell you a story of my tailgating experience many years ago.

When I was a youngster, my mom & I were taking a trip to Fl right after my dad passed away to get her out on a vacation & away from home for a few days.
I had heard the term "drafting" & knew I would get better gas mileage in the car to & from Fl (from La) if I "Drafted" big trucks.
So, I was "drafting" this one truck for maybe 5 miles or so. I don't remember, but I am assuming maybe he tried various things to get me off his tail but being young & inexperienced as a driver & never been in a big truck, I didn't catch on to his slowing & brake lights etc. After a little while, his truck abruptly started to slow & smoke just rolled out from the trailer tires. That scared the crap outta me as I knew I wouldn't get stopped in time if indeed this was an emergency stop like a back up or an accident just ahead of him. I hit the brakes.... HARD, backed way off & there was no back up, no accident & no reason for him to need to hit the brakes enough to smoke the trailer tires.
It was then I realized... he pulled the trailer brake just long enough to smoke the tires & make me back off. I'm 57 years old & I have NEVER tailgated again. That broke me & I've never forgotten it.

During my 29 -30 years now behind the wheel of a big truck, I have pulled that stunt with a couple of tailgaters & found it works the first time... every time.

I shiver when I hear smoke rolling stories like that. It's going to be a lesson someone will have to learn.

Im still chewing on that Officer who had no trouble following me in the rain on my bumper up and down mountain valleys ridges, summits, gaps and so on plus the occasional 35 mph town in a state route that was a solid 45 and 55 most everywhere else. Straight to Sayre NY.

I took a half mile momentum run for a steep'er and mr Bear pulled me over right then and there. With 45 minutes left on my entire precious 70 hour rule, fixing to lose 30 of those minutes dealing with him and still 25 minutes from Sayre. Massive inspection. I passed.

He knew, I knew, he knew more I knew all and knew that he knew I knew.

He says this. When you finish in sayre. Stay there. Don't even try to come back into my State today. In fact don't go anywhere at all up there.

Thankfully it was a one off 18 wheeler load of shingle for the entire VA Clinic up there. There will be no more Covered wagons going up that way unless it was for a load of reinforced parking lot bumpers.

You don't deal with them, you worry about yourself being safe for others.

I hate the idiot who is on my ### but I can't worry about them because they are a distraction. I may have 100k on the deck and worry about the people I can harm, if I don't watch what I am doing.

The worst thing to do is play games, slow down or what ever. I have had several times when a truck would slow down to show the driver behind him he's mad, sometimes slamming on the brakes while I am in the other lane or behind these idiots. I have called the company and in a few cases sent the dash cam video to them to show them how reckless their driver is. The other day I had one slow down to 30 mph because of a old lady who was trailing the driver and he caused an accident because people were slamming on their brakes and one lost control.

The most dangerous one had to do with a motorcycle and a truck, the truck was sitting in the middle lane doing 63 and a motorcyle came up at 80, slowed and then went around the truck, then slowed down to 35. The truck almost hit the cycle and caused problems for everyone. I know that one car followed the motorcycle off the freeway and I am betting they had a talk.

See I don't give a crap what others think, safety should be your concern not what's behind you.

Another trick that works is BB's. I've done this before. Drop a hand full of BB's straight down beside the truck and they will pummel the car behind you. If you're in your car, pitch the BB's out of the sunroof.

You need to worry about yourself and safety.Trying to get revenge by videoing the tailgaiters is not practicing good safety. What I do is slow down they'll get the hint and pass you.

When @pattyj is tailgated in her car she slows down by slamming on the brakes with both feet and fishtailing all over the highway.

I slow down when I'm being tailgated. I once had a guy tailgate me and u eventually got down to the posted "minimum" speed of that particular stretch of highway before he got tired of driving slow.

When they say to "open your following distance" you do it between yourself and the vehicle in front of you rather than between yourself and the tailgater.

If you speed up all that's going to happen is the tailgater will speed up as well and then he/she will have even less reaction time if you have to romp on your brakes.
