posted thread few days ago about my turbo problems. in short, dealer in new orleans area told me needed new turbo and would put it on for a measly 6300.00 dollars. when i asked if they took turbo apart and physically inspected vgt assy they refused to do it. not thier policy to do this only replace turbo. deadheaded 800 miles with truck developing no boost to a local garage at my home i trust. after dis assembly found vgt ring moving freely, no play in shaft, no fins damaged and no oil residue or bad carbon buildup. took a chance and replaced turbo actuator for 800.00 then took to volvo to have it calibrated. result is truck pulls like a new one. so just a heads up to you drivers with vgt turbo , have a visual inspection of internals done before shelling out money you dont need to. as far as the d16 goes i worked mainly off road in the gas wells of pennsylvania for a year and a half. truck and motor did great. dependable and no major problems. approaching 600000 miles so expect to do repairs soon but overall has been a great truck. as other drivers have commented though, volvo dealer service depts are a last resort. i dont know if they dont care how much an owner operator has to spend or if they really dont have any idea what they are doing exept what the computer screen tells them. i am an auto master technician so i know that common sense and instinct have to be combined with research and information to be a good mechanic. this seems to be lacking more and more. thanks for the time and space and i hope this can save someone else some repair money and headaches

You will find me complaining about Volvo in a previous post. The Volvo troubleshooting methodology is not designed to save you any money. Find an old school mechanic if you want problems resolved.
Engine problems are often singular in nature, but gives off multiple symptoms.
Volvo technicians (mostly) often jump to the most obvious SYMPTOMS, failing to understand that the SYMPTOM is not the problem.
The result is that they replace components as they go along in their diagnosis, most often replacing a bunch of stuff that never needed replacement in the first place. Fumbling along, using the trusty old elimination method, they eventually find the small problem causing big issues, and since they are never wrong, they would never admit that the thousands of dollars spent on replaced components that were not broken in the first place were so unnecessary.
Yep, the hunt is on for honest, competent Volvo repair shops. -
The above has been my complaint for years in both the automotive AND HEAVY TRUCK industries. "Laptop says " replace this. Dos not fix problem. Now... replace that." Problem??? Techs don't know WHY....the condemned part would cause the problem. THEORY, ME HEARITES...they don't teach it any more. It's easier, ( & techs...plz don't start w/ me I know your Service manglers are on your ##### to produce )...to do what the cunfuser says....& can back up w/ print outs...than to really figure out whats actually happening.
"Why this driver is drivng instead of pushing parts". 'Tis true.Last edited: Sep 7, 2012
