By the way "Thatbeardedguy", beards go well with flatbed. But you will have to shave to get on an oil rig.

    Just sayin...

You might want to think about it if you knew the compensation levels...

I'm trying to get into school for my cdl now and get hired in with a company. Thus far the most promising to take me on is an all reefer outfit. My ultimate goal is to move to flatbed. I like hard work and I definitely like all types of weather and not driving a giant billboard down the road. If you have a choice in which you will be driving, I would go flatbed. If you don't like it, dry van or reefers will be a cakewalk and a welcome vacation from the hard work.

If you want to flatbed, go flatbed. Right out of school. Measure twice. Cut once. Same thing goes for tankers. If that's what you want to do, go for it. Pulling a box to get started is actually a waste of time unless pulling a box is your long term goal. Don't just take the first job some a hole of a recruiter offers.

Do you happen to be the driver I took to Menards to make V boards in Minnesota? Not that many cascadias in the fleet.

That's another thing about flatbed, other drivers often go out of their way to help a fellow flatbedder. I was at the Stamart truck stop in Bismarck, taking a 34 on a Sunday. I had done my first tarp load the load before, but in a hurry to pick up the current load on my deck I hadn't folded my tarps properly.

In the morning there was no wind and little traffic in the parking lot. I decided to use that opportunity to fold my tarps properly. As soon as I started spreading the first tarp TWO flatbedders jumped out of their trucks to offer a hand. You don't see that level of brotherhood in square boxes.
