Wait til you pick up sugar in Baltimore.
    I've seen grown men cry.
    And they overload you
On the way out you scale
Then you go back and do it all over before the tears are even dry.
I've seen trucks leave over gross rather than go back to the docks.

I've been spotted before. Right into a overhang on the blind side. Crunch! Your good. You just can't get good help these days. That was 20 yrs ago.

This is the problem with this "backing by numbers" crap they teach in school. Just put that trailer in the darn hole and don't hit anything while you're doing it.

They over complicate everything with this "turn the wheel a quarter turn when you see this, then hang out the window and look for the 4th screw on your drivers side landing gear- after you see that, 3 quick jabs to the right, then move the truck 17 feet and give 3 quick jabs to the left, now you're trailer should be ALMOST pointed in the right direction."…

Just get it in the hole!!!!! It's really not that hard. Take your time, get out and look. Simple stuff. You can do this. Stop overthinking it!!!

My truck has a "resume" button right on the dash.

That is because the schools are teaching one how to back up to pass the CDL test. Not how to back a truck in the real world. I know I never saw a real dock until I was out with a trainer. Never backed between two parked trucks at the truck stop. School always took us to a huge truck stop that you could pull through the spaces.

I agree. They even have all those fancy names for different backing maneuvers. I'm sure I've done them all before but didn't have a name for it, just put it in the hole.

Experienced drivers, have you ever tried to shift gears while thinking about it? I've done it before and I'll growl a gear or two. If I just go without giving shifting much thought, it's as smooth as silk. Backing is the same way. You've just got to learn with experience. Once you get the hang of it, you'll know how to get the trailer where you want it to go without giving it much thought.

When you pick up a pen and write your name do you think hard about each and every step?
Or when you pick up a fork to eat?
Pull in, look at the dock, trust your eyes to send the info to your brain.
Trust your brain to send the correct signals to your hands.
    Don't override the natural reactions.
Throw out everything they told you in school.
    It's all bull crap.
It's what will happen eventually, so just get to it.
The truck is just an extension
    Another appendage
    Stop doubting your brain.

Yup... They teach to the test... Pass the test, get your CDL, then start to learn how it's really done... in the field.
