Sure, there are "big pay-outs" when human error/negligence causes a wreck. Problem with those automated trucks, is that they don't make judgment errors. EVERYTHING they do is because they were programmed to do just that very thing when those parameters exist. Why does that make a difference? Intent. The human was careless and caused a wreck. He didn't intend to wreck, but it happened. The robot was PROGRAMMED to wreck in that situation. Not only that, but EVERY similarly programmed truck will wreck in similar situations because that's what they were told to do. The fact that the wreck was intentional bumps it up into another level of seriousness.

Sorry, but not so sure you truly understand the "artificial intelligence" software parameters.....and why they have lasers, radars AND digital maps for the computer to "see" what's ahead, around and or behind........with multiple "if" statements for the puter to follow....so it won't necessarily wreck in similar circumstances......but again that's why Otto is doing the test work now....clearly with government mandated humans in the seat....so they can acquire enough real world data to make sure it doesn't do as you suggest.

It'll be great when its new and the shiny paint puts everyone in awe. However the rough roads, constant bouncing is going to get these sensors to mess up, how will they recover from a blowout..... Sounds good in theory with these perfect summertime scenarios but adverse weather conditions or situations is going to be where this thing falls flat. Feel sorry for who gets into a wreck with one of these things because they never had a chance. Family of 3..... 6? School bus?
On the bright side that means we'll all be gas station attendants or parking lot cleanup experts after this thing goes into full motion.... to refuel these rigs and pick up driver trash? Since the driver shortage will be no more....
Only thing these articles do is get people in a uproar and creates PR for those trying to profit market wise. Oh we're doing great things! Buy our stock.... invest in us!Starboyjim, x1Heavy and LindaPV Thank this. -
I think in the near term they will keep an operator in there, just so they have someone to sue, or blame when the autonomous truck fails.

I don't really see anyone building hundreds of thousands of miles of track, but they could do the magnetic strips on the side of the road thing. The rigs, car or truck, would have a sensor to read signals. Not too practical, like, who's paying the bills? Big bills.
Also, don't really see wireless signals being as reliable as would be necessary. I just can't see atmospheric conditions, solar wind, magnetic storms, so on being useful all the time. So I think I'll do what I usually do, pull my loads, show up on time, keep working. It's kind of habit forming.SidewaysBentHalo and LindaPV Thank this. -
I think we're going to see the founders of Uber on American Greed (as narrated by Stacy Keach). They haven't gone IPO but they are selling "investments" through Morgan Stanley for $1m minimum to those with $100m net worth or more. They're spending up a storm, the app is losing half a billion a year.
I'm gonna laugh....Starboyjim and gokiddogo Thank this.
