4 tractor-trailers involved in accident on I-20; 2 people killed
CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. - The Georgia State Patrol say a fatal wreck on Wednesday involved four tractor-trailers and a small pickup truck, killing two people.
The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. on Interstate 20 eastbound in Carroll County, near Georgia 113.
GSP says a tractor-trailer ran into the back of a second tractor-trailer. That second tractor-trailer then a drove over a silver pickup, crushing it, and ran into a third tractor-trailer. GSP said the third tractor-trailer hit a fourth one.
The driver of the pickup, Larry Donnell Adams, 53, of Benton, Louisiana and the passenger, Peggy O'Neal, 51, of Bossier City, Louisiana were killed in the crash.
The driver of the tractor-trailer that caused the wreck was flown to a nearby hospital. There is no word on the driver’s condition at this point.
Victoria Pope detoured around the wreck on her drive home from work after her friends told her what happened.
"It's like scary, honestly, that it could happen that fast, something like that," Pope said. "And I'm praying."
GSP said charges are pending the completion of their investigation. Troopers have not released the names yet of the people killed in the wreck, pending notification of family members.
The eastbound lanes of the interstate remain closed and there is no word on when they are expected to reopen.

Uh oh. Did I see that may have been a JS Helwig truck at the back? Don't be bothering Helwig safety department wanting a job there for a while.
Really hard to imagine the dynamics involved for a tractor trailer rig to run up over a stopped carchico9696 Thanks this. -
That last truck must have no governor. To hit with such force to push the truck in front uncontrolled over a pickup. YIKES!
-
Could be the drivers brain was asleep and just kept driving and driving. It happens when you're tired youre awake but not awake if that make's since.

What dose a governor have to do with it? If your traveling 65 mph and hit a stopped truck you can bet that truck is going to move. I was rear ended by fed ex I was stopped he was traveling 45 mph and he pushed me through a 4 lane intersection. He pushed the corner of the trailer in 15 feet and bent the frame of the tractor.Lepton1 and passingthru69 Thank this.

Uh, I think that's considered "released"...

This is what happens when you follow to close. All truck drivers should know the Smith system and how it works. 7 seconds follow distance would allow you to see 15 seconds ahead of you.

see it every day, driving 65 mph 2 feet behind the car they're pissed at.......it boggles the mind
KillingTime, Lepton1 and Getsinyourblood Thank this. -
Grabbed this frame from the vid. That dude was a long way from coming to a stop before making impact. Lucky (or unlucky?) that driver was not killed, too. Must not have seen it until he was maybe 4-6 seconds from the stopped trailer. And it's not like there was fog or rain or a sharp hill or other limited visibility scenario. These REALLY piss me off when I see them. Regardless, that truck driver will live in his own personal hell for the rest of his life on earth wishing he had been driving instead of driving and whatever else they were doing. (sleeping, texting, surfing, or otherwise doing something stupid while driving)
If the Franklin trailer had his trailer tandems 12-18 inches further forward, there may have been an additional casualty. And notice the king pin or 5th wheel busted loose on the Helwig truck/trailer. That's some serious energy. Imagine those final moments!! PAY ATTENTION ALWAYS people!! Stopped traffic can happen ANYWHERE, ANYTIME especially in the summer with additional traffic and construction.

The last truck is governed at 65 mph...
And as for the driver "lucky or unlucky" to have lived through it, they are in critical condition....
