I had a lot of different experiences with panhandlers in my days out on the road. One time I was parked at a Walmart and had just my fried chicken lunch. A guy who was about 18-19 years old came up and politely asked me if I had any food. He said anything I could spare would be great. He didn't ask for money, so I gave him the only thing I had in the truck, which was a chicken breast out of my 8 piece Walmart chicken container. He took it, thanked me profusely and then quickly walked about 100 feet away from me and sat down. I could tell he was very hungry by the way he was eating it. What really tugged at my heartstrings was the fact that he had a small scruffy looking dog with him and he probably gave the dog more of the chicken then he ate himself. He then got up and walked away. I really regretted not being able to go in and get him some groceries.
I also saw the other side of panhandlers. One time I stopped at a Pilot for fuel (can't remember where now), and a young guy came up and gave me the old song and dance about needing money for gas because his car had broken down out on the freeway. I didn't believe him for a second, so I told him I didn't carry cash. About 2 months later I pulled into the same Pilot again. I was wondering what ever happened to that con artist when all of a sudden, who should walk up to my door and start giving me his exact same story! Needless to say, I gave him a piece of my mind and told him he tried the same thing with me 2 months earlier. He quickly walked away and I never saw him again.

My answer is always that I'm new and don't have any money. However, I slept at mom & pop place in Stillmore, GA last week. in the morning this cute dog (see avatar) sat outside my door barking. The proprietor said he's a neighborhood dog who hits the truck stop 3 times a day and gets fed by all the local drivers. Begging is learned behavior.
Zangief, KillingTime, tucker and 2 others Thank this. -
