So I am going to a private school. I paid 3500 part of it its a total of 5500.. I got a receipt but it doesn't say the schools name It literally just says my name.. and partial tuition down payment 3500.. no one signed it or anything. Can I deduct this at taxes? Or should I ask for a more official receipt?

I think you can only deduct it if you become an o/o. But if you are a driver upu can get some type of educational credit. I'd say don't quote me

Depends honestly. I went through a college and did deduct my portion. Your receipt will not hold up in an audit. I itemized and deducted it. I would want an official receipt.
Birdman803 Thanks this. -
First you need to make sure your school is an "eligible educational institution."...per IRS. You need to ask your school if they are.
Here is a link I found in regards...The IRS site has a more thorough explanation of what qualifies..

There is a good chance you will be better off with the standard deductions so itemizing should not be an issue.
-
Don't you have to exceed the standard deduction before itemization is allowed?

NO! first thing to do is talk to an accountant! Second, quit getting advice from a trucking forum board on things like your taxes.

$5500!Wow! I paid $2100 to a fine East European school in Chicago and they thought (?,not sure if I have this right) me how to pass the exam. For the rest of the training I actually got paid lol.If I had to do it again I would have it done for well under 1 grand but of course I back then I didn't know people I know now.

I wrote mine off so I'll let you know if I get bent over for it.
They normally let things slide and then pop up 3-4 years later when you won't even remember what they're asking about. Oh our lovely IRS.
