I know what the law is but wondering what states are strict and enforce it and what ones are more easy going on it?
Specifically ny, pa , md, wv, va, nc, sc, ga, fl

Pennsylvania has just recently started enforcing the no overhang on 53' high mounts, hitting it hard on the I-380 and I-84 corridor. NY doesn't care on the Thruway, but watch yourself on I-84, I-684, and especially if you cross into Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie), there is one MCE officer (Trooper Spak F-57) that loves to cite you for this. His hangouts are the Mid-Hudson Bridge, church parking lot on 9W in Marlboro NY, and all along I-84 from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge to the PA line.
Can't help you with the other states, I rarely get out of my cage in NY/PA. Maybe Stan @KANSAS TRANSIT will be kind enough to chime in here, he runs all 48 with 53' high mounts and has been for a long time.Last edited: Sep 3, 2016

NY is the only one to watch out of that list. I did have a buddy get a ticket in SC but I believe that is a rare thing. I'll let @brian991219 chime in about the specifics of NY overhang I think he knows it better than he cares to lol
Edit: Speak of the devil he beat me to it!Last edited: Sep 3, 2016
KANSAS TRANSIT, brian991219 and Hulld Thank this. -
Thanks guys
I'll be coming out of ny but won't have any over hang till pa. I am Heading south down 81.
Looks like it will be in the neighborhood of 18 inches.KANSAS TRANSIT Thanks this. -
Mount one of these to the tractor. It would at this point have the capacity to carry a motor vehicle on the power unit. Now you would qualify as a car carrier and be allowed the overhangs.Viceroy1, KANSAS TRANSIT, Terry270 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well I rolled over the pa line today on 81 and immediately got pulled in for an inspection.
I guess cmv enforcement didn't get a holiday today.
Sure glad I hadn't loaded my tail car yet or I would of got a close up and personal opinion of over hang on a high mount lol.
Any way got a clean bill and sent on my way.KANSAS TRANSIT, brian991219, Ziggy319 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I run PA every day with a high mount and haven't been pulled in yet for overhang and I run with the "if it fits it ships" attitude. NY on the other hand I tend to be more aware of length but have been lucky there recently. It's all a gamble with the attitude of the officer in my opinion.
Hulld and KANSAS TRANSIT Thank this. -
Too be honest we have had no issues anywhere in the N.E. or down the coast for that matter, (one ticket in Fl. but I am convinced that was a newbie deal) "BUT" that doesn't mean we haven't just been lucky.
One of the main reasons of selling my lowboys and going to the 4 car was just this, in the past we may of had 3 big pickups on with overhang front and back all flat loaded, now that same load we may have a little overhang off the front (and nobody bothers us without the flippers out) but we tilt the second truck and tuck the 3rd, so no rear overhang, I am sure it has lowered our "profile" quite a bit, or at least that is what I would like to think?
Our biggest issue now seems to be Toll Booth collectors that will not believe you when you hold 3 fingers up, so they mosey out to the back of the trailer counting the axles on their fingers, then they come back scratching their heads, had one lady walk all the way around the truck, maybe she thought we were hiding another set of tandems on the other side?
lol -
One other note I will add, I instruct my guys to run the most practical route WITH a Toll Road, it limits our exposure esp. with the "Rest Area" inspection cops, in the end it saves us time and money.
Terry270, Hulld and brian991219 Thank this.
