Doesn't those cop cars all have driver-facing cameras now? Where's the in-cab video? I want to see what had that cops attention for the ~3 seconds that he didn't notice he had a motorcycle in front of him...

There is no way the cops are going to have inward facing cameras. Maybe a few departments MIGHT, but you will never see it as routine.

Hell even with forward facing cameras that are locked, the evidence that might incriminate a cop seems go "go missing" too often right now. Laws exempting the police from what laws the tax-paying peons have to put up with are legion.

Wow... I had to watch it several times and agree that a few more seconds on the front end would be nice to see.

My impression, trucker was changing lanes which at the start was clear of traffic. I can't tell if he had his turn signals on or not.

Motorcycles were changing lanes to get out of the way of the officer who was clearly approaching at a rate of speed much faster than the surrounding traffic.

Motorcycles saw the truck ahead of them merging into the same lane as them and responded appropriately by moving back into the left lane from where they came.

Officer DID NOT NOTICE this unfolding ahead of him as he assumed the bikes had gotten out of his way and was continuing at his high rate of speed and didn't brake nor move to avoid until he was upon the motorcycle.

Truck, bikes, and officer all at the same place at the same time... But seems the officer was distracted during the maneuver which should have been avoidable on his part.

Very surprised the State released this clip.
I would still like to see the full minute prior.

I hope the trucker has/had access to this prior to making the decision to fight it. And possibly push for some punishment or ticket to be given to the officer as well.

Hope the bikers got out of the way too.

What blind spot? That truck has 3 mirrors on the left side of it. And a driver with a head that turns. There is no such thing as a blind spot unless one doesn't care about safety at all.

And even if there was this mythical "blind spot", it's still the drivers responsibility to check it by any means necessary prior to making a lane change.

Not only are you supposed to look far ahead but you should use those mirrors to look far behind so you are aware of what is coming from behind at a high rate of speed.
When I see a motorcycle I don't move till he or she is gone, even if I have to brake for merging traffic after all it is a way of life around these parts.
Those tankers are always rushing to get back to New Haven,it appears to be a Lee transport truck probably paid by the load as most of them.

@okiedokie started an outstanding thread with a pdf article written by a former fighter pilot.

Yes indeed the "blind spot" exists. There's a name for it: saccades. Fighter pilots are trained to overcome this perceptual limitation. Truck drivers should also be taught the same strategies.

I get that. But essentially what I am getting you saying is the truck driver should have been looking at least 2 lanes over prior to lane change

Yes, I think that is what JimBobillyBob meant and that's exactly what I do when making a lane change on a multi lane freeway. Overtaking vehicles have a habit of not paying attention to my turn signal and coming on over into the lane I want to enter. Stay heads up to developing or potentially developing situations, unlike that Connecticut cop.
